The first upgrade for Windows 7 will fix some issues that users of the operating system have been experiencing when running Tablet PCs featuring the platform.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 will be only a collection of bug fixes and security updates, with no new features planned for the last version of the Windows client.

Among the many issues that SP1 will be designed to resolve are also problems related to Windows 7 RTM running on slates.

In fact, Microsoft has already released a hotfix designed to take care of no less than three issues affecting Windows 7 on Tablet PCs.

The software giant enumerated the glitches that Windows 7 customers came across when using the OS on slates:

“Issue 1 - You run an instance of a Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) application on a Tablet PC that is running Windows 7.

You use external digitizer to ink in the instance of the application.

You unplug and then plug the external digitizer into a different USB port while the application runs.

In this scenario, the external digitizer does not ink in the same instance of the WPF application.

Issue 2 - The pointer does not move to where you touch after you unplug and then plug a digitizer of an external touch monitor into a different USB port on a Tablet PC that is running Windows 7.

Issue 3 - The logon screen does not display the touch keyboard icon after you wake from sleep mode a Tablet PC that is running Windows 7.”

The hotfix offered by the Redmond company is only designed to resolve the problems enumerated above.

Microsoft advices customers that are not affected by the list of issues detailed in this article to not deploy the hotfix, and wait for SP1, since it will include the bug fixes.
