Windows 7 splash screen delay at startup

Hi guys, new to the forum but wondered if anyone around here could help me with a little problem I am having. I have recently (last Thursday morning) reinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium on my Dell XPS 16 and I have noticed since doing this it will lag at the splash screen on startup for 30-40 seconds before carrying on to the Welcome Screen. Obviously this isn't very long to wait but it is definitely longer than it was before the reinstall which is surely a bit strange no? I also seem to have a little bit more of a delay when shutting down the computer as it stays on the shutting down screen for a while longer but this seems to be a bit more inconsistent than the delay on startup.

I have trawled the internet and various websites looking for answers but nothing seems to make a difference. I ran startup in diagnostic mode and it still took just as long but startup in safe mode didn't have the same delay. I would appreciate it if anybody had any ideas about how to solve this as although it's not a serious problem, it is rather annoying? I also accept that this could just generally happen to my laptop as it has got older and it is nearly 4 years old (in January 2014).

Cheers.

Check what programs you have listed at start up. Type sys.conf in the search slot above the Windows Orb & when it opens select Startup. The only program you really need here is your Anti Virus so you can untick the others. Just untick them don't select disable. When you untick them a date will appear next to each item.

I already had a look at that but have now narrowed it down to only having 3 things running at startup (antivirus, Dell Dock and an Intel corporation program) and it still lags at the Windows logo splash screen. I tried running a full disk check on my hard drive tonight and that returned the all clear. So what else could it be?

Your System Specs indicate that you are using AVG 2014 as your AV. Many problems have been resolved by changing to a different AV like MSE or Avast. AVG is noted by many on these forums, far more experienced then I, as problematic.

As a disclaimer I do not use any of the above but do use Eset. It is not free.

I will give that a try thanks scr. Only got the free trial at the moment so need to look at getting a proper antivirus soon anyway.

Probably has nothing to do with your computer's age. My Dell laptop is older than that, and time from pushing the power button to the desktop appearing is 30 seconds or so. Of course, having an SSD has a lot to do with that.

One of the things I did to speed bootup was to go to the Boot tab in msconfig and change the timeout from 30 seconds to 5. Perhaps you had done that, and it was reset when you reinstalled?

A stuttering or lagging splash screen can signify a missing driver. The splash screen is when most of the drivers load. Could you be missing a driver or two? When you reinstalled Windows, did you install all of the drivers from Dell again?
