I have a Toshiba NB 255 net book that had windows 7 starter preinstalled on it. I recently reformatted my hard drive to remove a copy of Linux I had on it and entered in my OEM product key and it activated windows just fine. About 3 weeks into after reinstalling windows it is now saying it is "not genuine" with a black screen as the background. I would simply just re enter my windows 7 OEM product key HOWEVER!, The label on the bottom of my laptop has been rubbed away making it impossible to transcribe what the OEM product key is!

There is no pamphlet or other booklets that came with the net book that have the OEM product key on it.

Is there anyway to find the original product key for my windows 7 with the serial key worn off the tag?

or will I have to buy a new key?

Your post is somewhat confusing. if you mean you cant activate windows now because the OEM sticker is fuzzy, thats a bad situation. Normally, one should always take the precaution of making recovery disks asap and/or imaging the install. You can check on the Toshiba website if they'll ship recovery disks for your model (for a small charge), if that works your problem is solved.

As for recovering that OEM sticker key, the only possible way is to contact Toshiba- they may help if you can produce proof of purchase. But its unlikely.

OTOH, if you mean/also mean windows is now non-genuine despite the sticker key installed, please download and run this diagnostic tool, click on the Copy button in the tool, paste into notepad, save as .txt file, then upload the file with your next post.

In the first post when you said you entered your OEM product key, do you mean the key on the sticker? And at that time the sticker was fine?

And what disk did you use to reinstall win7?

yes the key on the sticker; and yes at that time the sticker was fine.

I used an ISO file to reinstall windows from a USB key drive.

See the problem is what you are saying doesnt tally with what that mgadiag report says- and between the 2 of you I'll believe mgadiag. As per that report yours is an OEM_SLP license with the corresponding product key. FYI OEM_SLP keys are different from the Sticker keys. Now if you had activated with the sticker key as you claim, that license would have been OEM_COA and the key would be the one actually on the sticker.

I assume you are confused/forgetful. Long and short is the present key will not activate online. Since you dont have the sticker any longer, your only option is to call Toshiba and order recovery disks for your model. Its the best and most painless way.

Forgot to mention, did you wipe out the inbuilt recovery partition when you reformatted? Check in disk management. If its there, you can revert to factory install state.
