well, before i got ubuntu, i tried a diskpart in command prompt. didnt work.

all of these links to stuff are over my head.

i talked with some tech guys at my local high school. they said if windows in recognizing, then its not a driver issue, being my pc is about 1.5 year old. they recommended backup, then format drive, re install windows.

which, with the disc i have may be a problem. i think its the windows recovery disc?

however i installed windows from it, it extracted files, did updates, but now windows still wont boot due to a recent hardware software change.

do i need an installation disk, and i need a link to dl that

Gene before I have to go offline mate use this as you can make an ISO for the Windows version you be sure to make only the version you have or you will have grief activating - not!

Got her up and running, reloaded all the software i can think of.

i'd say im like 95% back to where I was before.

only issue now is when i play my ancient pc games (roller coaster tycoon, Total annihilation, etc) when i go into loading or saving games it distorts the window so bad i can't choose files.

im sure thats a video card issue. but i just went thru that to solve it before the power glitch effed the pc up. i have latest drivers from card manufacturer. gonna try the game sites forum on that one.

Well you could try a GPU tets such as FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net I have never had to use it but it will stress test that card and before you do try reseating and maybe this

SLOTCLEANING

Now as for the slotsto clean them use a strip of old credit card about 1/2 inch wide nip thecorners off one end - preferably round them off hold a piece of thin lint free clothover the end dab on some form of alcohol - iso propyl alcohol (what we swab theskin with before an injection) is good and GENTLYswipe along the slots.

This can also be donefor the GPU slot/s and do not forget to clean the contacts on the cards /sticks either.

It is an idea toclean the contacts on the sticks / cards while you are at it but be VERY gentlewhen doing this.

Well that is your choice but you must remember just because there is a card stuck in the slots they do get crud that creeps into them as the atmosphere is full of minute particles that build up over time, and I have yet to come across a machine that does not have dust both fine and coarse materials in them.

machine is only a little over a year old. plus these two items worked fine before i had to reinstall windows.
ive reinstalled games, drivers, rolled back drivers, added patches to games, and tried compatibility. i think its a windows issue, possibly a graphics setting. i am just having no luck.the games will play. rct loads games and saves them via the bad window. TA plays but soon as u save or load it crashes. i would never buy an apple. but i wonder if they ever have these issues.

it could be possible the power flicker messed up the function of something in the pc too. ive run multiple tests with many different sites, software, etc.

only thing i cant get a driver for is a usb controller

Now I apologise for the mistake re what machine it is and how old I should have asked

I found this Product Support | Dell US but cannot tell if the chipset update will include the USB ports as the Dell site is really quite convoluted and difficult to navigate but then I found this How to resolve USB port issues | Dell US

so have a look and se what yu think.

Personally I would go the chipset - can't do any harm and the USB problems page may come up with something and it needs running form your machine a some these days want one to sign in to get support which again personally I think is pretty weak for the money we pay for these things.
