Windows 7 startup repair

I have not done it yet. I did run a virus check using AVG Rescue CD and no virus was found. But I still could not boot it up to Windows. Anyway I will go with the steps you provided and let you know the status later.
Thanks for your help in advance...

Thanks for the info. I will try that and see what happens. I will keep you posted. Btw, what other option do I have; if doing system restore via system repair disc still does not let me do that.
What error message??

It's a little strange that you completed complicated repair steps without asking back a single question or reporting any results except that nothing worked. This is hardly the kind of interactive troubleshooting that gets results here.

What results were reported after running Startup Repair 3 times? Which partitions were marked Active before running the 3 repairs. Please post back a camera snap of the Partition Wizard CD disk map with listings. What happened when you Rebuilt MBR using PW CD?

Were you able to copy out any stranded files to quarantine?

Are you ready to clean reinstall or run full Factory Recovery to get beyond the apparent ruin of the infection?

Reinstalling Windows 7

Sorry for not being able to communicate the information...
The diagnostic results indicated that the OS was boot successfully; however, I still could not get that boot to Windows. At this point I am ready to clean reinstall.

Btw, when I went to Advanced BIOS settings, the "BIOS ROM Protect" was disabled. Should this be enabled?

I would not disable BIOS ROM Protect which might write-protect your BIOS, until I googled the manual for your model and read about it.

Let us know how the clean reinstall goes. If you follow the steps given to get a perfect factory OEM reinstall then you can save a backup image of the finished setup and use it in place of every having to reinstall again.

Greg:

The "BIOS ROM Protect" is currently disabled. Do I enable it; or leave it alone?

Since I could not find the installed version, if I reinstall Windows 7 using another version, what effect it would be on my computer? I really appreciate if you have any suggestion.

Is this factory preinstalled Win7? What is the licensed version given on COA sticker? Use the Product Key to reinstall that version.

If it's retail Win7, what version did you buy? Do you still have the packaging with the COA sticker with Product Key?

It was a version that my son bought via online. The version that I have was another one that he bought for one of my old laptops, which did not have enough RAMs for the Windows 7. Since it was not installed on any of other computers, I wanted to use this version for reinstallation on the computer that I have been having a problem with. Btw, my son is out of the country and I wanted to do this before he returns to the USA.

Do you still have the Product Key with COA for the Win7 you bought but didn't use? Does it have SP1 included in the DVD? It saves hours of updating to have an installer with SP1 which we can help you with.

You can copy out any stranded files using Win7 DVD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Later you'll want to have your son find the packaging, email with Product Key or bank information for his online purchase so he doesn't throw away a $100+ OS.

I think I do. I need to find it. However, I dont think it has SP1 included. Can I download SP1, or do I have to buy one?
Thanks for your help in advance.

What is the version and bit rate, e.g. Win7 Home Premium 64 bit?

Yes, as you download your updates Service Pack 1 eventually shows up on the update list. It takes a while as you have to do other updates 1st.

My son is back. I will talk to him to see whether he still has the installation DVD. I will let you know as soon as I have a "gut" to tell him what had happened to his computer. Hopefully I will know more in a day or two.
