Hi

I have an Acer Aspire 5742G with Windows 7 Home Premium. A few days back, after what I thought was a recent Windows update, Windows booted very slowly and was slow/unresponsive upon booting. Even shutting down was not possible. Upon pressing the power button, it did shutdown.

On the next startup, from safe-mode command prompt I used the system restore utility (system32\restore\rstrui.exe) to restore to a version a week back. Upon the next boot, the OS loaded still very slowly and I was unable to use the system. Clicking the start button would take a few minutes.

Then I went back to safe mode command prompt and tried sfc. sfc stopped at 97% with the error :
"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

I rebooted to safe mode command prompt and tried msconfig. I used the diagnostic startup option. On the boot, the speed was normal. However, it was a bit sluggish when opening start menu, and programs (firefox, ms word) would not open.

I rebooted to safe mode command prompt and tried chkdsk \r. Upon reboot, there was no errors reported on the drive.

I rebooted and went to the System recovery option.
Under system repair, startup repair detected no problems.
When performing the driver repair, there were no problems.

The system recovery has the option of re-install windows. Windows 7 came preinstalled on this laptop. Would I be able to re-install without any cd? If that option will fix the problem, I would do that. I can backup my files through a USB boot.

Thanks

Check the disk s.m.a.r.t. status with crystal diskinfo, perhaps the disk is failing?
