Windows 7 system files I can delete/move

Hi,

I have an Asus Eee 1000 netbook which uses an 8GB SSD + 32GB SDHC for storage. I've got W7 installed working fine and only installed the bare essential apps on C and put everything I can on D (D=slow).

After all is said and done, I am left with 762MB free out of 7.51GB. I would like to know of any Windows 7 system files I can delete or move?

I've done the usual, disabled system restore, hiberation, page file, used CCleaner, prefetch and superfetch, turned off tablet PC.

I have not used a vlite'd image because I could not get one to work. After stripping everything away (even using a .inf file from a website), it always said a driver was missing during install and to insert the installation disc, so my install has been done from a standard x86 ultimate disc.

Upon using vlite, I saw large amount of space in tablet pc, scanners, and languages to remember a few. Can I remove some of these files manually? I've checked my installed languages and English is all that is present.

I've read online about the Winsxs folder, but upton reading a Microsoft blog on this, I think it is best to leave this be.

I've looked online but unlike XP (DLL Cache etc) I cannot find any system files you can safely delete.

Why you want to move your system files...

There is nothing to move or delete that would create a smaller image, deleting one item would not actually free space only break things. You see, there are multiple copies of almost every system file all hardlinked to a single location on the HDD. to free up that space you must delete every hardlink reference. There is just nothing that will free up the space you want and still be functional.

stevy22: I have always been under the impression that is it good practice to have atleast 15% free space on your C drive to maintaince performance and stability. Whether this is still true for W7 I am not sure. With XP, you could safely move the contents of the DLL Cache folder to D and with a small edit on a registry entry maintain the use of these files, whilst freeing up some valuable space on C. Obv I only do changes like this on space premium SSD netbooks.

logicearth, what about the \windows\installer folder? I have read online that this folder (500MB) contains files needed to install, repair or uninstall certain apps and windows features. As once the system is setup, I find I do not use these features. Is it then possible to cut and paste the contents to a folder on D, and then if an installer requires them in the future, I could copy and paste them back?

Are there any recommendations as to how much free space to keep on C for windows 7? The disk useage meter in computer turns from blue to red around the 700mb mark.

You can try, but I've only heard of problems with applications when you remove those files.
