Windows 7 System Restore Environment (HELP!)

Well, it sounds like it's pretty well messed up. Is it still under warranty?

Doubt its under warranty still. Is there a way I could hook up the hard drive from the Toshiba to another laptop or my desktop and back up any important files? And how would I go about wiping clean the hard drive and just doing a fresh install of Windows? I don't think they have the Windows install disc but the laptop has a sticker on the bottom with the serial # for the install.

Thanks again for your help Kego.

Yes. You can just remove the drive and put it into an external enclosure and connect it via USB/eSata/whatever to your computer, then copy the files over.

When you tried to use the Toshiba restore partition, did you hold the 0 down for at least 5 seconds, then release it?

Yes I held the button down for 5 seconds. Just makes a loud beeping noise. Beeps like 10 times.

Prob best way for me to back up would be to get some sort of cable to connect it to my laptop via USB or something. I'll have to look into options for that.

nick,
a couple of ponts:

To "rescue" the data, simply leave the disk in the original machine.
Burn PuppyLinux to a CD.
Boot from PuppyLinux which doesn't need your hard disk or win 7 or vista or anything.
With PuppyLinux, backup all data dear to his heart to a USB.
PuppyLinux is very easy to use and you will have no problems.

As the manual mentions on page, if you press and hold 0 during start up screen it will go into their own restoration tool. I think my neighbor may have tried this and it failed or something. When I try it now the laptop makes a loud beeping noise and doesn't go into the recovery tool.

My last laptop was a Toshiba and I reinstalled/repaired Win7 on it many times. The loud beeping is totally familiar to me :D. Scared me the first time actually, but keep pressing the zero (I just held mine down) EVENTUALLY the restoration will come up. I'm talking minutes here.

Will have to try that tomorrow. Thanks.

WIN7 repair options work great on Vista.

You will need to use the command prompt.

Does your win7 repair cd go straight to recovery options - or is there a screen saying "Install Now"

It goes to the recovery options. I changed the boot to the dvd/cd drive and then it says "press any key to go to cd". I do that then it takes a minute to load up. Then it has me select language and then on next screen OS (which it doesn't list), after that is the recovery options.
