I am trying to speed-up the shutting down of a friends Win7 desktop system. I followed the instructions in this article: https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/717-shut-down-speed-up.html

I have "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" set to 3000 (3 sec.), but it still take 10 seconds to shut the OS down. I tried changing the number from 1-2 sec. Nothing worked.

Is there any other registry value that needs to be changed? Perhaps I am missing something?

Thanks for your help.

I once search for a reason my desktop was taking so long to shut down (25s) on fast SSD.
Why it takes so long to shut down?
I found that it was / is the Avira antivirus.
10s is quite good on a HDD.

The standard way to shut down a PC, using what MS gives you, is definitely NOT the fastest, and involves too many steps. No wonder so many users just push the Power Off Switch. (not good!)

Make a New Desktop Shortcut, using this command line. Then just click on the shortcut to shut down windows.

%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 1

Be aware of the spaces in that command.

Try that and let us know how it worked for you. On my PC, it shuts Windows down in less than five sec's.

My shutdown shortcut is:
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /p (Turns off the local computer with no time-out period or warning).

C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /p /f (unconditional, Forces running applications to close without warning users)

Ok, I tried creating a new shutdown icon using "C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 00". No change. Still takes longer than 10 sec. to shut down. I've always had a shutdown icon on the desktop for years, using the above syntax. It always shut down in 3-5 sec. But now it does not seem to work.

You mentioned that the virus program was causing the trouble. I'll look into this. My Avast Free did a program updated just before this problem started.

If there is nothing wrong with Avast, I might try the syntax that Megahertz suggested. Got nothing to lose right? It's an SSD drive by the way, si it should shut down real quickly.

It's always been an issue for me. You complain about 10 or 25 sec shutdown. It takes a minimum of 45 secs on my machine. I only use Mawarebytes Free other than MS Security Essentials. The only time it ever shutdown promptly was after a fresh install. Since then I don't know what has caused Win 7 to shutdown slowly, but it's too much trouble to find out.
