So I have a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ670N and I upgraded it to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Now for some reason it doesnt work or it doesnt recognise it or something. It now says it is a Standard VGA Graphics adapter. I tried downloading the driver but it doesnt work. Somebody please help.

Ah ok, I had trouble getting my video drivers for my laptop too, i upgraded from vista x32 to 7 x64 which sony did not provide drivers for.

Have you tried windows update? that worked for me, but no control panel for the driver.

Have you tried this one?

Sony eSupport - VGN-SZ670N - Drivers & Software

It's presumably a Vista driver, but it may work.

Windows Update may provide a newer driver, once the machine recognizes the graphics card. Or, you may be able to install the latest nVidia drivers over these. (Drivers | GeForce Notice that the 8400M GS is on the supported list.)

I wish that the laptop makers wouldn't use custom device IDs for their graphics. Maybe it's justified for some technical reason, but I doubt that.

their all-in-one driver installer sucks. Older cards aren't detected.

The thing that should work is finding a site that has an old all-in-one driver pack or even a dedicated driver installer, and use that even if theoretically old, as it likely has the "latest" driver for that card anyway (as for obvious reasons they stop updating the driver for that particular card after a while).

Try this driver from siliconguide. They saved my backside a few times (and it's from where I downloaded the drivers for the card you see in my rig).
You will probably get a driver installer for Vista even if you click on Windows 7 64-bit (which is mainly because NVIDIA never made drivers for Windows 7 for that card), but it works fine anyway as Vista and 7 are very similar. At most you need to install it in compatibility mode to fool the installer program.

ahhh...this is very easy
now go to this page:
Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers
and then download your nvidia card
mine is like this.
dell xps m1530
nvidia geforce 8600 m gt.
that is my card.
which I will choose:
Product type:geforce (I look at the title and I see that you are geforce so you choose geforce.)
how to know product type.it easy
look at my name card
nvidia GEFORCE 8600 m gt
the GEFORCE is the product type. if you are not geforce but it's nforce or something.just check the words that after the word name nvidia
product series:it's where you choose it's notebook(I think it's for laptop) has the M.you are 8400 M gs right.you choose Geforce 8M series
now came to product(it may have for some):you choose your name of your nvidia graphic cards.find the line it says: GeForce 8400M GS
For me,I'll choose GeForce 8600M GT/GeForce 8400M GT
"/" means or
but I'll choose GeForce 8600M GT because it may better than GeForce 8400M GT
and if you are desktop, you choose the product that is no letter M(it means for notebook)it just series.
now:
operating system:you choose your operating system. Now,you choose windows 7 and find you are 32-bit or 64-bit
how to know you are 32-bit or 64-bit:
This MAY work.
press start+run(hold the windows logo and then press R button to start the run)
press dxdiag
it may have a window open. you can press yes or no.
and then look for the operating system.you will see you are 32 or 64 bit
if you are windows 7 x86(32-bit) choose windows 7 32 bit
the other x64(64-bit) choose 64-bit
and then press download and then install normal

actually,you are VERY WRONG:
the older cards actually maybe recognize.
I have Windows 7 AIO installation disc with x86(32-bit) and x64(64-bit) here.
In the nVidia card.It doesn't means that it doesn't recognize the card.
But in ATI.The ATI Radeon x1050(I think it's from 2008),it still recognize it without any programs.
to make windows 7 recognize nVidia card, you just need to install the driver program of your graphic card and then you maybe restart your computer and then Windows 7 will recognize it.succeed test by me
