First of all I KNOW I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit edition.
I did verify it through the System Info Performance View and Print screen.

From Windows 7 desktop I ran the Install disk.
Chose Install Now - then chose Go Online to get latest ...
I chose the AGREE box - I chose the 64 bit UPGRADE option.
Everything goes fine but then I get this error:

The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

You can’t upgrade 64-bit Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 64-bit version of the installation disc, or go online to see how to install Windows 7 and keep your files and settings.

32-bit Windows cannot be upgraded to a 64-bit version of Windows. To upgrade, obtain a 32-bit version of the Windows installation disc.

I can't figure out WHY I get this error
I KNOW I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

I even tried choosing the 32 bit Upgrade but it still gives me the same error.

I have 32 years experience with Windows and have never seen this.
Maybe there is something in the registry that is incorrect.

Any help would be appreciated.
No, I don't want to do a FRESH Install, I want to figure out what is going on !

Hi Phantom,
If you've already got W7 64, why re-install it?

1st line second paragraph and last line in post contradict each other.

Would you also fill out your system specs.

I was trying to update / install IE 11 and this is what MS Update said to do.
Sometimes when there are issues with Windows, you can run the UPGRADE portion of the Install and it will KEEP your Programs and other info while putting Windows back like a Fresh Install, but you don't loose your stuff, but you will have to redo ALL the UPDATES.

From Windows 7 desktop I ran the Install disk.

No, I don't want to do a FRESH Install, I want to figure out what is going on !

There is NO contradiction in what I said !

Where did you get the Win 7 install disc? Are you sure it's the 64 bit version?

If you right click on Computer and select Properties, it verifies you have Ultimate 64 bit? I have Pro 64 bit and it looks like this:

Win7ProSys.jpg

I have the 32 and 64 bit versions of Win 7 Ultimate ISOs. This is the size of the install.wim file for each. Check yours and see if it matches either:

c:\Sources\install.wim 64 bit 2,885,158
c:\Sources\install.wim 32 bit 2,196,305

32 years experience ?

You don`t use a disc to install IE11, you simply use Windows update.

You need a 64 bit disc.

You can`t upgrade Ultimate, there`s nothing to upgrade to.

What exactly are you trying to do ?

Are you trying to do this? Which sometimes is called a Upgrade.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Information This will show you how to do a repair install (aka: in-place upgrade install) to fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers.
As AddRAM has posted, you get I.E. 11 through Windows 7 Updates.
I.E. 11 will not be on a Windows installation disk.
