I recently installed Win 7 Ultimate on my dad's laptop (Acer 4720Z
Intel premium dual cpu @1.73ghz,ram 2gb,32-bit operating system)
all seemed fine until I tried conecting to my wireless router(belkin n+)
it asks for the password and I imput it but it comes back as wrong and I am very very certain I am putting in the right keys.
I have the atheros wireless driver installed.
then i tried installing a TP-Link wireless usb adapter but it also wont connnect.checked the device manager and I noticed a ? besides other devices,I expanded it and then it showed up to deice icons with ! beside both under the name base system device, right clicked on both and tred to update the drivers but the computer keeps saying it cant find the drivers.
Also, which usb wireless adapter is best for the computer to use with a belkin wireless g router, computer OS is win 7 ultimate

Welcome to the sevenforum mohammedbusra!

You didnt say which bit version of Win7, nor where you acquired it... please let us know that info also.

Acers website is going to be your first source as karlsnooks pointed out. It is a pretty decent manufacturers support site... I've seen worse! Anyway, according to their website they offered 3 different wireless NICs in that model laptop: Atheros, Broadcom, and Intel... So follow the info in aem's tutorial posted above and determine which wireless NIC your Dad's Acer came with. Then visit the Acer website to DL the driver... Acer Support - Download Drivers

So.... A few questions to help us help you:
  1. What bit version Win7 Ultimate, and where did you get it?
  2. Where did you get the Atheros driver you are currently trying?
  3. Which TPLink USB Wireless NIC do you also have?
  4. You asked for advice on which NIC is better, but in one sentence you stated your router is a Belkin n+ and at the bottom you said Belkin g... which is it?
  5. Why do you have the TPLink USB nic? I will assume it is because you have a n router and you got this to have n on lappy... or was your father having problems with the built in nic in the acer?

I had bought the acer on ebay with windows xp on it.then bought the 7 ultimate dvd from the store.it's 32bit version and also I downloaded all the drivers from the acer website but on the same website I couldnt find any WLAN for windows 7,closest i found was vista ultimate which I installed(atheros).
and regarding the tp link usb .it actually is an old one on my desktop(xp professional) which i tried to see if it works on the 7 ultimate.I have a wireless N+ at home while my dad's a wireless G at his own house.
the laptop is with me at my place cos he wants so war games on it but he could only connect via the LAN connection
sorry for mixing all things up in my 1st post, was really sleepy
I have an acer extensa 5320 which is runing 7 home pre 64bit with everything working intact
really do appreciate the help and I have been able to correct the base system issue.I had downloaded the wrong card reader.
Thanks again for all help

I had a similar problem, Windows 7 did not like using the default wireless router password for me, probably because it's not safe to do so. Instead of using the default wireless router password you should create a new one and try using it instead.

After reviewing the thread, I think it would be helpful if you would do following:

WIN key (that's the one with fhe funny looking wavy flag on it),
type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes),
hit ENTER key
in the resulting display, expand "Network Adapters"

Now tell us what you see. What are the entries there? Do any have Exclamation marks or Question marks by them, or any yellow or red color marking?

I also recommend, until this is resolved, that you disconnect the USB network adapter.

After you have the precise info on the Atheros adapter, then go to the ACER site and get the WINDOWS 7 driver for that adapter.

Follow ACER's instructions on installing the correct driver.

I think you have several problems and we should try to solve only one problem at a time.

Unless your system will not function without the router, then I would also recommend removing the router from list of possible problem sources.

There is no Win7 driver on Acers site as OP said above... Vista drivers should have worked, they usually do!

karl is correct... to help us help you, can you please send a screenshot of device manager? (devmgmt.msc)

If ACER doesn't show a specific driver for your network adapter, then this would indicate that either 1) the adapter is not compatible with Win 7 which is unlikely OR
2) the default adapter driver installed for Atheros is to be used.

However, we need to wait for your snapshot of devmgmt.msc output so that we can make the best recommendations.

Hang in there

Acers website implys the Atheros driver will be automatically installed by Win7... as they dont show a driver listed for Win7 and the same page says:
This page shows only drivers that are not contained in Windows 7.

Darryl Licht,

I have an Atheros adapter on one of my computers which has been updated a couple of times by Microsoft.

I suspect he may not have checked the option to also look for driver updates when Windows Update is run.

I hope that the devmgmt.msc snapshot is informative.

From what I could read about this problem, the XP drivers for the Atheros AR5007EG may work better than the Vista drivers. The built in Win 7 drivers aren't working for some reason so you need to use the ones from the site posted below.

Read this TechNet thread about how to use the cz Atheros download site, it's apparently very slow to show the driver download " you have to click and wait a good long time", they also discuss which drivers work best and how to get them.
Atheros AR5007 windows 7 drivers

Get them from here. ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows
