Hi,
I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my custom built machine. Installation went through fine, but when I log in, the system freezes every now and then. I tried getting a minidump, but nothing is created (like a C:\Windows\Minidump). Here are other things I have tried -
1) Safe boot - works fine - no freezes for a long time
2) Safe boot with networking - works fine - same as above
3) BIOS, Video card driver (GeForce 8400 GTS), motherboard chipset driver - all updated
4) Re-seated Ram (1 GB on 2 separate sticks) in different slots
5) Clean boot - disabled nVidia driver, which was the only non-MS driver - this time started getting Freezes randomly. Freeze happens while browsing a website, playing a game or even when left running idle (without any applications running).
6) Ran a memtest last night - did not report any errors.

I am out of ideas. Any help will be appreciated!!!

System specs:
FoxConn 975XAB motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo processor (I think it is the 6800)
BFG GeForce 8400 GTS Video Card
Corsair 1 GB RAM (2 x 512 MB )
WD Harddrive - 640 GB SATA
WD Hardrive Caviar Black - 1 TB SATA II

Thanks!

The minimum requirments for 64bit is 2GB of ram,i think your problem lies therein.

It might not be the sole problem, try using the 32bit version and see if it will work ok,if it does then you can guess that the 64bit is the issue at hand or at least the lack of 64bit drivers:)

Still facing the same problems :(. I added 2 GB of RAM and tried running IE8 - everything froze. I had resource manager on and it didn't register anything more than 760 MB of memory usage. That is probably not absolutely accurate in terms of memory usage, but probably also gives a decent picture.

I have since then, tried clean boot with disabling of half the MS drivers as well as the only non-MS driver and have had no success.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

One thing I noticed is that the fan sitting on top of the chipset is not working anymore. The temp's reported in the BIOS settings seems to indicate everything is fine, but this might be an issue. I will replace that fan and see if that helps.

1) Verify your temps for your graphic card.
2) have you upgraded recents graphics drivers ? If yes, then try reverting back to more stable one. (specially if you have an nvidia card)
3) Try having only 2 dimm used in memory slots. Try have the dimm to be the same size and the same manufacturers.

Just some quick advice I can think about...I do not know if this can give result, but it cost nothing to try !

Great pointers. I will try these. I do have 2x512 in 2 slots and 2x1GB in the 2 other corresponding slots. I will try removing the older ones. Also, I did update the nVIDIA drivers to the latest ones for the GeForce 8400 GTS card. I have tried clean booting without that driver loaded and it still locked up.

How do I check temps on the graphics cards?

I tried re-installing Windows 7 and now it won't go past "Windows Starting Up" - more problems!!!

I will keep trying...

To check your CPU temps id would use techPowerUp! :: Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.3.8

Try running start up repair ,tutorial here
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html
Try it three times if the first two do not get it.

If that fails, seeing as it may be your GFX card,Go to Nvidia, get the leatest stable drivers (no beta ones) and load them to a usb or a CD.

On the Install part of the Win7 Installation disc click advanced>load drivers and load the gaphics drivers manually.

And if that gets it going, can you check your device manager (control panel> (small icon view) device manager) and check for any yellow triangle's.
If so,can you post a screenshot.

If it works in safe boot it is probably not memory. While less things are loaded at safe boot and hence you would have more memory available I would look elsewhere

A good place to start is in event viewer (type eventvwr in search). go to the windoes log>application tab. Look for errors (errors have red in the left hand column) that say app hang, app crash, etc.

when you find them use the snipping tool (type snippiing in search) to make a screen shot and upload it to us using the attachment icon (shaped like a paper clip) in the reply form.

I tried running the Startup Repair 3 times. Didn't find anything on either of the attempts. I tried running repair from the installation disk by booting up from the installation disk and then running "Repair your computer". It started scanning and then froze in the middle of scanning. Next I tried re-installing Win7 on my other hard drive (1 TB Caviar) and that gets stuck at "Setup is starting". Not sure where to go next.

Gave up in frustration:mad:!!! Tried formatting the drive and installing Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit. Kept getting stuck at "Setup is starting". Took memory down to only 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) by taking out the older 1 GB (2 x 512 MB), but no luck. Tried a different hard drive - no luck.

Switched back to Windows XP 32 bit and everything works fine. No replacement of adapter card needed or hard drive failure. Not sure what the issue is - with older motherboard or memory or graphics card - I guess Windows 7 32bit or 64bit does not just work for me at this point.

I have Windows 7 RC 32bit running on my Thinkpad T41 (pretty old machine by today's standards) and I really like it. I was so hopeful that I could solve the problem and gave it almost a week and a half of continuous tinkering. But finally had to move on. Maybe some other day I will get some time to try re-installing it on a different partition/disk and see if it works.

If you do get your problem solved Iashep, please post, so I can try the same.

Hey guys, I have recently purchased windows 7 ultimate 64bit with a new custom built system. I have exactly the same problem with you guys. This by far has been the biggest dissapointment I've ever encountered in regards to microsoft.

My system has

ASUS P7P55 LX motherboard
iCORE i7-860
8 GIG 2000mhz ram
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1Gig video Card

+ more. Its a 3000system.

I spent 250 roughly on windows 7 ultimate. Biggest waste of money ever. I have loved windows all my life up until now. I'm highly dissapointed. It isnt your system guys. I'm running a fairly high specc'd comp. I have the same issue as you guys. So it must be microsoft. Are there any possible UPDATES for win 7 ULTIMATE that you guys can point me to.. that will solve this problem. My email is [email protected] . If ever there are any updates on this situation.. please email me....

I tried to install Windows 7 x64 on a different machine and interestingly enough, everything went pretty smoothly on the install. This one has an Intel motherboard, but the processor is older (not the newer iCore ones), but I do have 8 GB of RAM and the ATI Raden HD 5870 card.

What I am learning more and more is to try the installation without any thing plugged into the USB ports. Try to install with just the basic stuff attached - keyboard/mouse and monitor. You might also try with switching to the bare minimum 2 GB that you need for the x64 install and see where that leads you. It is indeed frustrating to have such a highly specc'd machine and not be able to install the latest/greatest OS from Microsoft without having to go through these hassles.

Where are you getting stuck at this point?

I went to my computer technician and it worked fine with him. I got to to install all the programs i needed and it seeems to be working fine now. I guess updating all your drivers to be compatible for windows 7 helps. It was possibly my keyboard or mouse that caused the freezing.
