Hi,
Background: I've been doing my research on this for a while, but have yet to find a solution. It seems to be a common problem with varying solutions depending on the user. I have a basic level of understanding, but may need some hand-holding on specific tasks.

Windows 7 Professional 64bit

Problem: My windows update isn't updating and has given me error code 80070002 every time I look for updates. I've run some of the recommended windows fixes with no luck. There is no list of installed updates either.

Related info: sfc /scannow does not work. I cannot restore to previous restore points. It seems I cannot do repair installs, only a full clean install (obviously I would like to avoid this). I have run SFCfix and there are no errors (see below box). I have also run chkdsk and there are no errors.

Any further information needed?

Help!

The following Key appears to be missing from the registry, according to the CBS.log...
\Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_microsoft-windows-kerberos-adm_31bf3856ad364e35_none_5c31f57aa4e48c0a\6.9"

I'm not sure why CheckSUR didn't find and flag it :(

However, the key doesn't exist in my machine either, although there is a related entry elsewhere. There are no other versions of that key within the stated hive that I can find, so I wonder what's going on...

Perhaps that is the source, rather than the target, in this instance...

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
REG QUERY "HKLM\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\VersionedIndex\6.1.7601.18766 (win7sp1_gdr.150217-1551)\ComponentFamilies\amd64_microsoft-windows-kerberos-adm_31bf3856ad364e35_none_5c31f57aa4e48c0a"
REG UNLOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS

post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

I just remembered - I backup my registry each and every time I run a cleaner, and have done so for many years. I have backups from 2011 even, if that would help.

Generally I dislike using registry backups except 'in extremis' as the point of the registry is that it reflects the current software (this is where System Restore is so powerful, as it keeps both registry and files in step). I certainly wouldn't dare use a registry from more than a month ago!
I'll shout at my guru again ;)

Ok. I'll wait!

Extra info: I tried to use system restore before - it wouldn't restore to a point before all this was occurring.

Let's a have a closer look at another part of the registry...

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file SideBySide (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Once done please upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive and post a link.
