Windows 7 Update Error Persisting

Hello there!

I am having this problem regarding my Windows Updates for a while now, and I don't know where this is coming from. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and whenever I shutdown, the update just keeps on happening. Is it because Windows 7 releases a new update daily for me to download? Then again, when I manually install the updates, it just keeps on failing for an unknown reason.

Please be gentle in helping me with this problem. I may or may not know computer terms and processes, so it would be nice if you can go through it step by step. Thank you!

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Sorry about that. Was supposed to follow up with the screenshots as soon as I got home, but slipped off my mind. There you go, though. I hope someone can help me.

And to add, I downloaded that SURT thingy that the thread suggested. It suggested that I install a certain update and it also failed. I really don't know what is going on here, and I don't wanna resort to reinstalling the whole thing just because.

Thanks in advance!

We need details - the error messages you get when attempting to run the CheckSUR/SURT tool would be a good start.

I can't seem to reproduce it. I found the folder of CheckSUR in my D: and decided to click it, but nothing is happening. Should I reinstall the whole thing?

I tried clicking the launcher, nothing is happening. I tried clicking the application itself and the cmd pops out super fast that I cannot even see what it says.

reboot and run the file you downloaded again (KB974821) - there may be something in the background blocking it otherwise.

I was finally able to install the hotfix update. I'm not sure what the next step us. I don't see any CheckSUR application and it's not even an accepted function by the cmd.

The CheckSUR tool is the large download you were instructed to run when you followed the Windows Update instructions - KB974821

Fin wherever you saved it to and double-click on it to run it again.

I can't seem to find the folder, so I tried reinstalling it again and it prompted me the same thing. Is this natural? It also says in my list of updates that it is "Successful" so I am a bit lost from this point now.

Update: I found the folder containing a bunch of zipped files. Okay, I'm really lost sorry.

Update 2: I tried installing the updates again and they still fail. I swear I did all the steps in the thread you redirected me, so I really don't know how in all the world are you guys going to begin with this problem.

That shows that the tool ran properly today, and found no problems.

I think we'll have to go at this a different way...

Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

Perfect ;)

I note a few things...
Both files are fairly short by most standard - the only have data from today in them
The Search service had problems with a bad index.
The sptd driver/service failed to load - this is part of the Daemon Tools suite, and is known to cause problems in WIndows 7

This error code in earlier version of Office was due to a registry error - let's have a look at yours in some detail...

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage /s

post the results.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.
