Solved Windows 7 Update fails to even find updates (error:

I still can't find anything relating to the WebCamMax error. :(

There are a number of potential problems in the log, though.... - note that you almost certainly do mot need to take action on all of them!

The only reason that AShampoo is in the list is to remind me to tell you that this program in some versions is known to cause problems with Windows 7. You seem to have a fair number of alternatives available, and uninstalling it may be a good idea.
I also have a dread of programs with names like 'WinOptimiser' - they tend to be registry 'cleaners' or 'opyimisers' which in fact are more likely to cause problems than to solve them. I don't know what AShampoo's version does?

Presumably, at some point you have Sophos installed as AV? Which exact version??

Yes, Sophos was my AV/Firewall until the subscription expired. Version 10.x as I recall.

I've uninstalled the Ashampoo WinOptimiser and reg cleaner at your recommendation.

You need to see if Sophos has a cleanup tool to run after removal - it obviously has left some items behind, and they may be conflicting with BD and causing problems.

Hokay - What's the status with WU now? (new updates are due today/tomorrow!)

(What was the last update that actually installed? - when? - check the Installed Updates list and/or the Update history)

Okay, Last updates installed, 2 of them, on 1st October! apparently.

last_updates_zps0c0a29d7.jpg

BUT, when I try to run Windows Update...

update_now_zpsb7d9d6fc.jpg

And of course, I've still got the problem that because so many files have been removed or failed to install, my computer now thinks it's running an invalid copy of Windows, which I assure you, it is genuine, it came from Acer with the machine.

OKay - let's have another look at the licensing....

Please followthis tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Ignore errors produced when clicking on theCopy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup filesfor some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to yourresponse.

From what I can see, this error is the result of permissions problems in the registry - the common 'fix' is to grant all-and-sundry full permissions, but I refuse to countenance that as a solution, as it will reduce the security of the system markedly.

Let's see what the MGADiag etc. throw up, and work from there.

That still looks like an unregistered dll error to me.
The question is which dll?

Try this...
Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 wuapi.dll/s
regsvr32 wups.dll /s
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll/s
regsvr32 wucltui.dll/s
regsvr32 wuweb.dll/s

net start wuauserv

reboot, run another MGADiag report, and post the result.

Lot of error generated by the above dll coding, until I added a space after the .dll before the /s
Then they seemed to work okay.

Bother - well done for catching that!
(My source has it all OK _ but comething must have happened with the cut/paste, which I didn't notice!)

We are getting to the point where I want to do a repair install :(

I know, me too, I don't suppose there is any chance of keeping my programs if I reinstall Windows over the existing Windows 7 install?

Or failing that, how about if I reformat another drive, install windows 7 pro on that, and put the original C drive in an external caddy? Might I keep my programs that way?
I've got a back up of all my doc's and hopefully emails done via WD MyPassport anyway.
