Hi,

My computer continually freezes when trying to install update or other software.

I have run AVG Anti Virus and Malawarebytes Anti-Malware.

These have all come up clear.

I ran SURI as per the post instructions and it have not finished after 12 hours.

I ran scannow and got a "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"

No error but it is freezing on an update KB890830.

Did CheckSUR not produce any log file at all? - there's no CheckSUR.log file in your upload.

Please post the log if there is one at all.

The only log file was the CBS log included in the ZIP file. I ran it again last night to check and got another CBS.log, which I have attached.

Let's try this again...

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Sorry Noel - I am completely confused.

The post states:
Step 1 - run SURT, as stated in the original post. This ran for 12 hours and never finished.
Step 2 - run SFC scan, as stated in the original post this did not find any errors. And returned the message:
"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"
Step 3 - Windows Update Error. As stated in original message not error listed.
Step 4 - Log Collection. I zipped the logs as per instructions and attached to the original post.
Step 5 - Start a new thread, I though this was a new thread.

The CheckSur file have the following information:

=================================
Checking System Update Readiness.
Binary Version 6.1.7601.22471
Package Version 26.0
2014-11-26 12:43

Checking Windows Servicing Packages

Checking Package Manifests and Catalogs

Checking Package Watchlist

Checking Component Watchlist

Checking Packages

Checking Component Store

Summary:
Seconds executed: 243
No errors detected

So I am a little unsure in following the instruction what I missed, I have gone back to the instruction as per your last message and am at a loss on where to go next.

Thanks

That Checksur result shows that it ran successfully - today, at least.
That leaves me almost as confused as you ;)

Please upload the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file - hopefully it will have a little more helpful data.

There are a number of problems showing there - not just the one - and it looks to me as if a full reset of Windows Update is required.

Let's start with the automated fix from MS...
How do I reset Windows Update components?
ignore the popover that may appear on the page - get rid of it, and then download the reset tool for Windows 7.

Run it, and note the results, then reboot and do a Check for Updates.
What happens?
Attempt to install ONLY the oldest found update.
What happens?
If it installs OK, try the rest - if not, then post the new Windowsupdate.log file aand we'll see if anything has changed.

It looks as if the data collector hadn't finished saving the log before you uploaded - please try uploading another copy of the file.
the .NETupdates are possibly not the bet ones to attempt a test with anyhow, try installing KB2847077 instead before uploading the new copy of the windowsupdate.log file.

Hi Noel,

Was able to install about 15 updates without an issue, I did a few at a time.

After reading a post I tried to install the offline version of KB2858725, it starts and sits in the Processes but no prompt or message window is displayed.

This left 2 updates left:
KB2858725 - .Net Update
KB890830 - Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - Nov 14

It is currently trying to install KB890830. It started at 9.07 pm last night and is still running at 7 am this morning. The only entries for this period are: All updates already downloaded, setting percent complete to 100

This is still being written to the log so will let it go until tonight.

I have added the windows log I collected last night and will add another one tonight.

My immediate suspicion where the MSRT fails to run properly (though it can take some time on a large HD) is that there is malware preventing it from working. It's possible that some other program is interfering (perhaps AVG?)
I tend to think that the problem here is external to MSRT - perhaps either a locked file or disk problems.
I need to have a look at the event logs...

Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

There are a huge number of MySQL errors in the Application event logs - all indicating corruption of the various schemas in use.
The System log indicates a lot of error 51 - 'An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk3\DR3 during a paging operation.'. These can often be ignored, as they can be generated as the system registers the presence of a USB-attached storage device.
Please check which HD these relate to - use the Disk Management console to see which disk is being referred to as Harddisk3/DR3

There's not really a lot else wrong in there - although there do seem to be frequent failures during the shutdown/reboot process.

The first failure code in the recent update attempts was this one...
'Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070308: Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2984981).'

Try this...
Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
REG DELETE HKLM\COMPONENTS /V PendingRequired

reboot and then attempt Windows Update again.

Hi Noel,

I followed your instructions and all the new update installed successfully, including the .Net update that has been an issue. It has re-installed some of the failed ones, all of the new ones without error.

As far as the shutdown/reboot, it has not been working. It says shutting down but never does. This is all working since your last change. Thank you for your help, certainly prevent me from going completely mad.

I will leave this open for a couple of days and check the updates, it no problems I will close. Really appreciate you assistant with this.
