Solved Windows 7...why?

Every time an new version of windows supersedes the previous some things get worse.

Now when you do a search in the "search programs and files" box it returns hundreds of results that take ages to pore over to find your target. Before (as in xp) you could nominate the folder where you knew it was and you get just a few with your target easily spotted.

What happed to "Recent history" in a folder when finding a file. It's mind-numbing to have to repeatedly step through the same numerous folder branches again and again to get to a frequently used file.

Every new version of Windows takes away more of your freedoms! Even with XP I could sill run many of my DOS graphics programs in full screen. W7 -no more! And DOS mouse capability has been eradicated for most programs. There are still many DOS programs (and batch files that I create) that do things that none of the windows bloatware can do - and do them faster!

I have got DOS-Box but it is such a tiny screen box and is considerably slower than the DOS command windows.

Are there are ways around these issues?

Disable Windows search and install Agent Ransack - does all that I need. This will search specific folders as it is a right-click context driven utility.

Hello apogee and welcome to Seven Forums. You can still search in one folder. Use the search box it the top right of Explorer.

It is not DOS. Regardless of consumer level help docs say. The technical backend disagrees.
It is a DOS-like command interpreter. Not DOS itself.

really...? because I was thinking windows xp and previous windows versions search was not very good. to say the turth there was no instant (search as you type) search in start menu... if you want to search only in folder you can do it there is advanced search where you can define lots of things.. if you need good dos support i recomend windows 98. bicause in windows 7 there is no underlying DOS. and you need to use emulator, yes dosbox is one of them
every now and then i see people bashing new windows.. and i cant understand why because their arguments are usually blind and full of anger.

Be fair vaidas. Windows 7 must come as a shock to anyone who is making the jump from XP. I know I took some time and the help of the excellent tutorials on this site to come fully to grips with it.

The 'problems' come from people trying to use 7 the same way they did XP. It's not the same and cannot be used the same way.

That is true. You have to adapt to its peculiarities but once you do it is worth the effort.

I thought the search in xp was appalling. It often through up hundreds of unrelated items.

I've only used the search a few times on 7 and its always been accurate, but then again the only thing on my pc is games lol

I never found Windows Explorer to be flexible enough for my needs...since the days of XP, I've used Powerdesk Pro 7.0.13 which is now offered as a free download. It has an awesome file finder (which runs as a separate application).

(Personal opinion: avoid Powerdesk 8 at all costs. It installs a buggy Explorer shell extension that makes the whole system freeze and is surprisingly difficult to remove. I would even consider this to be malware.)

Well some might but it is not a requirement. I have never liked icons and so always show files as lists, similarly I always have all files and extensions shown. That is not going to change. I also like to have an independent means of doing certain things even if the same can be accomplished within Windows. MS might want to see us doing things their way but they still allow us some leeway so you can't blame some of us for choosing a different way.

I agree but you shouldn't close your mind to alternate ways of working. Who knows you might find a better way of doing a job.

True but I do actually like the way of doing things my way at the moment - probably getting too old for some of these new-fangled OSs anyway.
