Hi all,

I have a DELL D630 installed with Win7 build 7600.16385.x86fre.win7_rtm.090713-1255
The DELL specs are : T7500 2GB NVIDIA Q135M. Latest Bios A16
Ever since the fresh install W7 will not restart, instead of restarting the Dell
will just break to power off after the shutdown procedure. All other power settings
seem just fine. Normal shutdown, Hibernate and Standby/Sleep work fine, even the CPU fan is perfectly controlled by windows. Already tried to boot in safemode, also checked the bios for power options, but there are none to control with the DELL. The DELL diagnostics is completely passed with succes. Even did a fresh install to double check. Anyone seen this before?

Cheers,

Bob

If all else fails (assuming W7 was an OEM/supplied OS) try submitting a support ticket to Dell with your system support code... they're usually on the ball...

Should you have done an upgrade did you run the W7 report/advisor tool first?

Thanks for you quick reply!
The OS was not OEM, however I checked the DELL website and got confirmed that de D630 is W7 compliant eventhough DELL is not distributing W7 drivers for the laptop.

What really counts is the result of Microsofts W7 Upgrade/Advisor tool. If you didn't run it you won't know which components Microsoft may have flagged up for special attention or remarks in terms if compatability.

Clearly Dell won't support you off the originally installed OS, and the ways things are standing right now your machine is unbootable - personally I'd be inclined to revert to the OS it had when it came from Dell, run the Microsoft W7 Advisor tool and proceed carefully from that point - based on the results presented.

Hi Guys,

Thanks again for your replies, and it seems that I did not make myself clear enough on the situation.
The laptop boots fine. The problem is that once the system is booted I can't restart it using the restart
option within windows. If I use this option the system will just shut down and I have to power it back on with the power button.
Just as extra information, when the system shuts down when i have chosen restart, the shutdown is brute, brute in a way that the hdd wil do an emergency park which is audible. Same as when you would unplug the battery when you are not on AC. So to be clear there is a real diffrBence between using shutdown or restart in the way the system powers itself off.

But not to be mistaken, the system works fine beyond the problem, in all cases I am able to boot it and use windows normally. So it is not really a huge problem, just an annoyance that I cannot restart it without having to power it on manually after a restart.

Cheers...

Bobster. Thanks for the clarification of you problem. I have been doing some knowledge base searching and have had no luck. Hope that you share your resolution with us if you find one. Good luck to you!

Ok, As a sort of a last resort attempt of getting rid of this issue I went into the devicemanager
and did something that normally I would never do if it was not a last resort attempt.
I changed the Computer device from

ACPI x86-based PC

to

Advanced Configuration andPower Interface (ACPI) PC

And believe it or not, the restart would work perfectly now!

Unfortunately after a few restarts the problem returned and the restarting just shuts down the laptop again.

Ok, getting a bit desperate about this problem...
The behavior seems totally erratic, did a new clean install of win 7 and at first the problem seemed to be solved, however after a few updates and software installs the laptop would shut down again during restart. Also tried a 64bits version of the OS and it would behave the same right from the start. Just to make sure that the hardware is ok I did a test install with XP pro and this would immediately restart correctly right from the beginning. I read a lot about people successfully running win7 on their Dell D630 and there is nothing known about this particular issue. Could someone at least confirm that win7 is restarting the way it should on their dell D630? (running BIOS A16)
Thanks!

Same problem with a Samsung R540 laptop. Problem is inconsistent - every now and again it will restart. Does restart normally in Safe Mode.
