Just like many other people on this forum, and other W7 support forums on the internet I am having wireless issues. :(

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5739G Notebook and I got it on Friday.

I am experiencing random internet dropouts which either disconnect me totally or give me "no internet" or "limited access" messages.

  • Other computers and devices connected to my router are fine.
  • When I plug the laptop into the ethernet cable, it's fine
  • When I use a USB wifi reciever it's fine (Belkin 54g wireless usb).
  • The issue is only when using the built in Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100 AGN.
  • I have turned off IPv6 and homegroup as some people have suggested.
  • I have uninstalled the device and reinstalled.
  • I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Intel.
  • I have turned off any power saving relating to the Wifi device.
  • I have tried turning off WEP/WPA/encryption on the wireless to see if that worked... it didn't.
  • I tried changing the channel of the wireless broadcast from 6 to 1 and then 11. No difference.
Desperate for ideas here or I am going to have to take my laptop back!!!

Did the driver that you download "again" (sense a little frustration and I can really understand) include the Intel ProSet / Wireless WiFi connection utility, and did this particular utility give you any additonal diagnostic options that you didn't have before.

No it was a separate download. I downloaded it and ran it. And it 'failed' on the association test.

Both my usb wireless dongle and the intel one are showing connecting right now. Dare I take out the usb and see if it holds?

Why not....fingers crossed of course

EDIT: Sorry we posted at same time...try running it with only the intel connected. Reboots always help...of course you know that.

hate to unnecessarily bump this thread, but I found this while investigating your issue
Association Test

The association test checks for Wi-Fi connectivity. Association is the establishment and maintenance of the Wi-Fi link between devices. When security is enabled, the devices only exchange security credentials.
  • Passes - if the client is associated successfully
  • Fails - if the client is not associated successfully
What to do if the association test fails:
  • If the access point signal strength is low, use the signal test to check the signal.
  • Verify that a profile has been created.
  • Verify that the profile SSID matches the access point network name (SSID).
  • Remove the existing profile and create a new profile.
  • Verify that your Wi-Fi network is not included in the list of excluded profiles.
  • Verify that the MAC address has not been excluded in the access point.
At intel site here Intel® WiFi Products - Manual Diagnostics Tool also something at Yahoo Answers about SSID issues here Association Test in Intel ProSet Wireless? - Yahoo! Answers or have we given up?

Could it be a possibility that my router is somehow not compatable? My router is a Netgear DG834GT but it's got custom firmware on it from Sky Broadband. I took my laptop round to my parents house last night and they have a Belkin router and it connected fine with no issues. As soon as I got home... again no internet access.

Form a Moderator at Microsoft Support (wireless signal fades out)

"Windows 7 cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers"

I have to believe that this is at the root of most of the wireless connection issues with Win 7.

Sky are sending me a new router. I wonder if this will "fix" the problem.

Oddly my girlfriend got her new laptop today, also an acer, also with the 5100 wifi card, and it connects no troubles at all. Still no new router from sky yet to try that out.

Intel 5100 Wirless Issue Possible Solution

Hello I was reading about your problem and it look like the 5100 card is b/g/n and your router/modem is b/g

I would set the router to broadcast g band only instead of mixed which is usually default on most routers as well if in the wireless adapter advanced features see if it has the option to set it to g only as having n enabled is not necessary for your router but could be causing the connection issue you have been having this is the only thing I can think of that has not been mentioned here good luck hope this helps...
