Windows 7 Won't Shutdown Windows Logon Wont close

Hi, I am using Windows 7 64 Home Premium, and my PC/Desktop will not shut down. It always says "Waiting for 1 program to close" the program in Windows LOGON. I wait but it never closes, even after hours waiting.
Any ideas ?

This is commonly described as a hung App. Or hung application. In your case it looks like LOGON its self which is probably not LOGON but some program that is interfering with LOGON. That's my educated guess thus far.

To help me diagnose what the issue is I'd like you to do a few things.


1) I'd like to see the last 50 events in the Event Viewer. To simplify this process I created two batch files which will create the logs. Once the logs are created, highlight both logs and right click and zip the two logs. Then upload the zip file here.

Run these two batch files inside the attached zip file in this post on your desktop and the two logs called, system_log.txt and application_log.txt will be created on your desktop.

The other thing I'd like to see is what is all running in the background and auto starting. Knowing this can be used with the Event Viewer logs to help discern what is causing the computer to not properly shut down. The program called Autoruns will achieve this. Run Autoruns and wait for it to scan. Then go above to File and save the ARN file. Now zip the ARN file and upload here. You have a couple issues. The first being the most prominent is Corel PaintShop Pro. That is indicated as an App hang. However, it doesn't look like it's installed correctly or was uninstalled incorrectly. Are you using PaintShop?

The second is Windows Live. That is now a defunct Windows service. Are you using Windows Live at all? Do I need Windows Live Essentials? - Ask Leo!

Have you tried checking RAM and whatnot yourself? It looks like it in the logs from what I can tell. I don't think it's necessary if true. Then again, maybe this is firing off when you force a shut down with the power button. Very common.

Hi Thank you for this information, I use Paintshop Pro 8 Daily all day, so I thought I'd delete windows live mail first and check if that helped, and it closed down - Great!! I tried it again and again it closed, so I will mark this as fixed.. Thank you.. I would like to update my paintshop pro 8 to a later edition, but not been too sure which is combatable with Windows 7 so I'll leave that for now, and if I get the issue again I will see which paintshop I can use.. as for the RAM checking, it's not something I normally do I just tried anything to sort the problem, as I'm not very PC savy..

No problem.

If PaintShop works for you then that's all that matters. Continue to use it. No real reason to upgrade unless you need a feature your current version doesn't already have. And I bet like Adobe's offerings PaintShop is not cheap either.

Your error for PaintShop might be because PaintShop isn't run as Admin and in XP compatibility mode. Right click the PaintShop shortcut or the actual executable (.exe) in the install folder and chose properties | Compatibility. Chose XP SP2 and towards the bottom "Run this program as an administrator."

Ahh... its still the same. I've upgraded my Paintshop pro (which I wanted to do anyway) it went away for a while, but last few times its hung again.

Okay, please run the batch files again and Autoruns and ZIP those and upload here again. Your last uploaded logs looked like PhotoShop was hanging on shutdown. Also, I would like to make sure Windows Live and all of its components are removed. After I look over all that again I may have you do some diagnostics on your end where I'll have you disable certain things in Autoruns and then reboot to see if the problem is still there as a test.

Question: What version of PhotoShop are you using now?
