Hi

Sorry for starting a new thread - I couldn't see anything directly relevant. My computer will not start normally - it reaches the windows screen and freezes. Ordinarily I would use system restore but when I try to do this I am told there is no system restore point as system protection is turned off. I can start the computer in safe mode but I cannot turn system protection on since the tab for system protection does not show up where help says it should. I have tried to allow the computer to repair itself but it doesn't seem to be able to do so. I'm sorry this information is a bit vague - I can answer specific questions if anyone is willing to ask them.

Dear davethesquirrel,
Welcome in to Windows seven site! You asked us to ask you specific questions!
1) how do you rate yourself regarding computer knowledge? Beginner, intermediate, better than intermediate or advanced(pro)? I was just kidding!

A few things spring up!
1) Did you tinker with the registry which led to this problem?

2) Did this occur after Microsoft updates?

3) Did you download any software/programs before this occured? Drivers, etc!

4) Did you change anything on the desktop, like adding gadgets, changing themes, installing the "aero" theme?

5) DID YOU INSTALL ANY NEW ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE (Very sorry for the bold type, but it was purely for emphasis)? AVG, for example.God forbid, were you running two Anti-Virus programs at the same time?

In safe mode access to the "system protection" is denied! I would like you to post as many as possible system specifications, like RAM installed, what security software you installed.
It's unfortunate that you did not have or "create" system restore points and as rightly said "a system restore point is the first rung of the ladder to climb to recovery"! Anyway, those waters have passed under the bridge! Awaiting your reply!
Regards,
DR.Sreedhav

Have you tried the System File Checker?

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Run a Malwarebyte's scan and a virus scan as well, if you haven't already.

On hindsight what you aimed at is obvious--infection.

Thanks for replying. I have run Malwarebytes and it has found nothing. When I try SFC /Scannow I am told that "Windows resource protection could not start the repair service". When my computer tries to repair the problems encountered on starting up, it reports Error 0x490.

Thank you for your reply - I shall have to give you a fuller response tomorrow as it's getting a little late here! I have a nasty feeling that I may have installed some programs a little rashly - I think my only defence is to plead that I'm a beginner in terms of understanding how computers actually work!

Dear davethesquirrel,
No need to feel bad at all! The very definition of "experience" is "learning not to repeat the mistakes we made in the past"!
Before the music industry woke up, we used to download illegally mp3 songs, The Beatles Albums, music Videos, movies, etc! Now i am straight, but in those dark days, my PC was infected routinely! So,please don't even dream of torrent downloading as it is not only a violation of the Law but also results in an infected PC!

Once you are out of this logjam, i request you to shift your browser of choice to Mozilla Firefox : Home of the Mozilla Project. There are security add-ons for that browser, important and essential ones being 1)NoScript,2) Better privacy,3) AD-block,4)WOT (Web Of Trust),5)LinkExtend. Download software only from reputed sites, to name a few,1)filehippo.com,2)tucows.com,3)majorgeeks.com,4)softpedia.com (softpedia has dedicated secure download links) and 5) freecountry.com, so on & so forth!

On every hyperlink, right click and scroll down to WOT and later LINKEXTEND to verify the reputation of the link!

Best wishes,
Sreedhav:)

You can back up your files if needed now using Win7 DVD or Repair CD before running the requested repairs: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html

Startup Repair will automate System Restore but if not offered, run it from the DVD/Repair CD Recovery options too. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html

Startup Repair should also automate SFC but it can also be run separately from DVD/REpair CD command line: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
