Windows 7 workgroup used to work and now one computer cannot rejoin

This is my first thread so hopefully I have followed the rules

4. Asus RT-AC66U
5. Normally Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 but I have uninstalled it on all machines temporarily

Problem

I have 3 computers Main , HTPC, and Laptop. My laptop connects thru wifi, my main connects thru a powerline that is connected to my router, and my HTPC is connected to my router directly. I had the homegroups working fine and then I decided to change the name of my laptop because it was too long. After I did I didn't have access to that laptop from my main but could still access thru the HTPC with homegroups.

I read some forums online that suggested just simply leaving the homegroup and starting fresh because it would be easier. I did that on main and tried to rejoin the existing homegroup but haven't been able to join the homegroup back. I decided then to leave the homegroup for each computer and start completely over.

I'm able to create a homegroup from HTPC or Laptop and both of them can join no problem but my main cannot join either homegroup. If I create the homegroup on the main then neither the laptop or the HTPC can join.

Essentially when I go to homegroup, it says "HTPC has created a homegroup on the network", I click join and enter the password and then it keeps trying for a good 30 secs (compared to almost instantly on the other computers) and then it says "Windows cannot set up a homegroup on this computer".

I've tried resetting my router / modem, unplugging everything, I've changed workgroup names, I've uninstalled my network adapter drivers, I've removed my antivirus completely, I've gone to C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking and deleted the entire folder, I've made sure the passwords are the same on all computers, I'm on a home network, my time is set, and I think that pretty much covers it. The only thing I found is that Homegroup listener wasn't started in services and so I started it but I'm not sure if it has ever been on but makes me wonder if there are other services that were turned off maybe?

I know people hate homegroups and etc but I am completely dumbfounded here and it's really annoying me because it worked fine before and then I messed with it and now it's broken I'd like to know what happened or how I can fix it. All my computers show up on the Network part and I'm able to transfer files and shares just fine, but I'd like to get homegroups working again.

Sorry for the lengthy post and look forward to getting advice / answers.

Kaspersky is famous for causing problems with Homegroups.

If you deleted all files inside of the PeerNetworking folder on all Homegroup machines then you shouldn't be having these problems unless Kaspersky is involved. You can either try configuring Kaspersky to work with Homegroups or remove it completely using the uninstall tool for Kaspersky.

If certain services are turning themselves off then try running a system file repair scan using the sfc /scannow command, if there are file problems then run the scan three times rebooting after each scan.

Thanks for the help. Ya I read that Kaspersky could cause problems with Homegroups but considering everything was working fine with kaspersky installed before not sure what could have happened . I have removed Kaspersky on all machines.

I didn't bother deleting the files in PeerNetworking on all 3 computers since the issue is only affecting one computer but I'll give that a shot.

No luck

I delete the Peernetworking folders on all 3 machines, I ran the command sfc /scannow and I removed all remnant of Kaspersky with the removal tool. I restarted / shut down the computer between each different step.

Still the same issue where no computer can join my main computer on the homegroup.

With the RT-AC66U it's required that you update with the latest firmware directly from the Asus site.

The original firmware for the RT-AC66U does not work with Homegroups.

The first thing I did when I got the router was to update to the new firmware and the homegroups worked fine before and currently work on 2 of the 3 computers so I'm pretty sure the firmware isn't playing a role.
