So the other night, I was working on a PS3 problem and had several tabs open on my windows 7 computer, but had not touched anything for a while. I was taking a hard drive out of my laptop and installing in my other laptop (again not touching my desktop) when it suddenly shut down without warning. I tried to reboot and it said "loading windows files" which I had never seen before. It then went into startup repair mode (which took forever) and then said it could not be fixed. I tried booting again and nothing. Finally, I did a system restore, then a system recovery and still nothing.
I looked up forum after forum until the search history on my google tab looked like a manuscript. I tried disabling startup repair. I removed my RAM and ran diagnostics on each one. I did a scan disk check. I tried booting into safe mode. I even followed some very long command prompts that had worked for other. Still NOTHING!!
I finally got on my laptop and created a recovery cd, which also took forever because I had to take out the secondary hd I had just put in there as a slave as it was creating an error message. After getting the recovery cd, I thought it would be the magic I need. I ran it and tried to find out the diagnostics. I tried recovering through boot manager and fixing it with the image on the cd. Seriously, it has been something like 7 hours of working on this now.
Anyway, I finally came to the website below, after trying many other boot managers and having my computer get a little further each time. It actually would get to the windows startup screen but then when the windows icon was trying to load it would restart again. So I tried the following and voila! I give it to anyone and everyone in the hopes that they will not resort to eating their own heads when this happens as I was certainly contemplating. I also include another link that I did not have to use but may work if you cannot find your boot manager.
So if nothing else works, insert your recovery cd, make sure you boot from your cd/dvd-rom drive...go into command prompt and rebuild your boot files in the following manner. If your cannot find your boot files try the second link first. I hope this helps someone!!
How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows - Note: I could not get any of the options to work by typing them in directly and had to use the in depth prompts to rebuild my boot manager completely for my computer to boot.
