Hi all!

Had this problem for ages and never got round to posting for help, but cannot for the life of me figure it out so hopefully one of you guys can!

My x1950 was working fine with Win7 upto a month (or more?) ago, when the system refused to boot into the OS. After dismantling/cleaning/jiggling/poking it didn't seem to be a hardware issue so continued to investigate....

When I start up the computer normally, it will load up normally until the point where it should display the login screen, it is at this point that the system 'restarts' (You can hear the fans power down) but fails to do so as there is the '3 beep' from the mobo (GPU related problem in POST I believe?).

If I boot into safe mode, it boots sucessfully, but any subsequent restarts will result in the above scenario. However, if i remove the graphics drivers in safe mode then reboot, the system DOES boot up normally - although any subsequent restarts mean I go back to square one!

I have tried numerous different drivers for the x1950 with no luck at all, all end up going back to the same scenario and it is very frustrating

Could it actually be that the graphics card is failing and any attempts to use it result in a crash? Could it just be the driver? All very strange and confusing!

Anyways, any help would be most appreciated!

Could be the card failing, but it also could be the drivers.

AMD/ATI does not support your card anymore so updating the drivers normally won't work. Look at this: AMD Game Forums - Catalyst 9.3 Legacy drivers and Windows 7 Try what is suggested there and see if that helps any...

However, if I were you, I would go ahead and get a new graphics card that will natively work with 7.

could you boot into safemode , click start all programs acessories then the run command

type msconfig the return

under the boot tab tick "no gui boot" and "os boot information"

the reboot normally and let us know the last thing written on the screen (at the bottom) before it crashes

its ounds like it may be hardware related but we could try and resolve any software issues before you go spending any cash

Thanks for the responses guys....

merkat106 - Tried installing the 64-bit 9.3 catalyst drivers, but no luck - Installed ok but still got the same problem :(

archie123 - Did as you asked in MSConfig - Last thing it shows is classpnp.sys, then screen goes black and does the 'reboot' I mentioned above

Looking more like hardware isn't it guys? :(

yep classpnp should be the last thing to load so im thinking hardware too but im sure we have seen issues with that card or at least an ATI card on win 7 with your exact same problem , try a forum search see if it throws anything up

Thanks for the replies and advice guys, think I have tried almost everything imaginable to get this card working, so time to get a replacement...

What would you guys suggest? On quite a tight budget at the moment, was looking at the Radeon HD 5450 - the X1950 was fine for what I used it for, so would it be ok?!

AMD actually provides Catalyst 10.2 drivers for the "legacy" cards -- of which yours is one.

You should try those drivers before giving up and getting a new card.
