Windows 7's Unexpected 'Killer' Feature

Hmm thats an interesting idea, often thought about putting program files on another drive but thought that wasn't ok.

Well I did manage to get another 6gb free, so now I am at 9gb free. I just might try your way out on another PC, but install the RC to test.

I am almost ready to pull the plug on XP but the 32bit to 64bit, running 32bit apps is the decisive part.. I know it will be ok with WOW64, and doing so I can add the third 2gb chip, so I can get that all working, it might help me a bit more, with 6gb Ram than 3gb (XP)....

Gerry

did you do a clean install? I have W7 Pro 64-bit and use 50.1 GB. I have autoCAD MEP 2010, the whole CS4 package, Trane Trace, Office 2007 the usual tools for burning, Kapserksy KIS.... I also have swap-file on automatic, some restore points (limited to 7 GB)
BTW, you can assign how much space is used for restore points... that technically could use up any space if you don't limit that.

It seems something has installed itself on your computer.

Nonsense. I could not disagree more. But, I will try.

OK - success. I disagree even more.

Well......I do have 3 PC games installed, and just checked...they total 28gb :o
DOH forgot about the games!

So that would give me 37gb free if I removed the games, my son does have an xbox so maybe I should, lol

A little OT (chuckle), I've heard somewhere Dis-keeper has an unexpected killer feature also. :D

Back OT, it's even hard to get one half of my brain to agree with the other half.

One half always thinks it's right, and accuses the other half of being left.

I disagree with both of them. :geek:

Too many restore points? Too little Ram increases HDD usage..
I have it on a 124 Gb partition, which is part of a 750 G HDD. So i couldn't care less about HDD usage. But when you have (expensive) SSD or so I'd be worried about avery MB it uses.

ho wmuch did it use whne you installed it? Please tell me you didn't do the Vista--> W7 upgrade and now carry around all that old junk :geek: I mean how much did it use after a fresh isntall that formatted the partition?

I did do a clean install and restoring my programs was easy because most of them are on a separate drive not another partition on the OS drive. So it becomes a matter of simply creating new shortcuts to the desktop. That way if windows decides to take a hike my programs, files, photos, receipts, serial numbers, music, etc are safe on a separate drive which gets backed up weekly to an external HD which periodically gets burned t DVDs. All of this takes less time than to type this (I am an incredibly slow typer):D

I got scorched myself about five years ago and decided that ain't happening again!

Hi pasquanel,

After doing a clean install of windows, how do you make programs work without their registry entries? and what programs are those?

greetings.

UH Honestly I cant remember, it is the RC (7100) thats on there, no Vista, so I think it was about 16gb? for 64bit install.

Restore Points? hmm havent checked, but will right now: it stated no backup points found...

I'm going to take out the games, they were not to play with, but to test and see if they would work in 64bit, which they did.

I just may install the RTM I have, and do what "pasquanel" did with the prog files, put them in another drive.

All programs are installed on a separate drive after the fresh installation of windows I go to the other drive and create shortcuts and then drag them onto my desktop. The programs run just fine and the operation is seamless, you really can't tell the difference.

Curious. When you first run the apps, do you need to re-configure them?
I was thinking the possibility of the apps adding in vital registry keys every time he opens them on a new install...

But I am with you...it is curious that he is getting this to work

I know there are some programs that don't put anything in registry,
but what about file handlers in general?
How would windows know PSD is photoshop CS4?, that doc is Word 2007, etc.. if there isn't a key pointing there.

Nero usually installs a ton of reg keys. They are not necessary to run it without trouble?

If this is true it changes everything I was taught for the past 10 yrs.

When you think how many register entries an average application creates, that alone makes you think...

Strange.

I'm game. I have an empty partition. I will install 7 on it and just copy over the two Programs folders (contents).

Before I waste my time, do we agree that is what the guy is saying - Clean install, copy folder(s)?
Yes. Nobody wants to say aloud what we are thinking (ref. bozone), maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle...

I appreciate it a lot that you are willing to test this. Keenly waiting the results.

I'm not sure I'm following you, I use Foxit viewer to view PDF files it's installed on my E: drive all I did was create a shortcut to my desktop and after that whenever I click on a PDF from the C: drive it opens instantly. If this isn't supposed to work I'm happy I was to dumb to realize it...lol.

The programs were installed before, I was using most of them with Vista. Whenever I do this I always save the setup files and keys to another folder. If by chance a program does not work I can simply reinstall it. But most work right out of the box.
I may be wrong here but to my mind this isn't any different than if you were running programs from a server, the program is installed on it and you have access through a shortcut.
