I got the x64 version without tools, to install in VirtualBox just fine. I just don't like Win8 as presented.

Not super impressed so far. I did a full install on a spare pc had laying around. I can't figure out where the Heck the installed pograms are listed (like the start orb is now), Do you have to do a search to find everything? Other than that it is a lot like the Gnome3 or Unity desktop envirements in Linux, I mean ALOT. Looks like it would be great on a touch screen or tablet, not so much on PC. Just seems I waste more time trying to find where the program is than actually running it LOL. Just my 2 cents so far.

I'm a bit sat on the fence too at the moment. It's going to need some time to grow on me I think.

That is weird! It never asked me. I think some folks who are going VM had this problem. Either way have a look here:

Windows 8 developer preview build genuine Product Keys

I know we are not supposed to post keys, but these were given by MS for the free to all Developer build. If I broke the rules please let me know.

No it didn't even pretend like it was going to. I installed on a physical system Vs. VM. that is why I thought that was weird. Hmmmm, I will keep looking around for you though!

Are you doing a custom (Full) install instead of an upgrade install?

No problem, it would make sence if it thinks you are trying to upgrade it would need the key to verify you are eligable. Good luck :)

All of the Control Panel applets are still there, you just need to either know the .cpl names (which still work launched manually), or you get to them via the Control Panel on the start pane (scroll down, select "More Settings" - it'll open the older-style Control Panel just like Win7's). The start pane is going to take some getting used to, but after forcing myself to use it yesterday it is actually growing on me, even on my desktop PC.

Thanks I will play more tonight with it. It will definately take some time to figure it out!

Anyone know if there is or when the Beta will be out?

I would recomend install on a seperate system or through VM. It is certainly not ready for everyday use. You could create an image of your 7 setup and when your done playing with 8 just image back.

When a beta is coming, Microsoft will make it widely known. It won't be for awhile yet, if the timeframes/milestones are close to what they were for Windows 7.

I hate it.

It feels clunky to me. I don't like the look of it either.

Overall the metro "start menu" and the metro apps look like they would be great on tablets and maybe on a picture frame computer on the wall. Walk by, swipe the screen and look at the weather app full screen.

However, on a 24in desktop monitor it all looks positively playskool. Definately not for anything other than the most casual use by grandparents, tablet, wall computer or phone.

Hopefully in the end during install you will be asked which interface you would like to use and so can select it then.

Fun to play with for the moment though. Cant tell ypou how lost I was multiple times till I figured things out. Launching the metro IE first thing i was "Ok, how the heck do I exit this?" alt-tab doesn't work, there is no close button, right click does things but nothing related to getting out of full screen... FINALLY I somehow accidentally rammed the mouse in to the lower left corner and found the popup start menu item :P

Spent the evening getting used to how it all worked and imagining fun uses for it but none of them involved my 24 in dual monitor desktop machines.

A lot of the "normal" desktop UI is looking promising as well though, nice looking, better organized and better flow, hopefully that'll continue.

From what we've heard over the videos and blog posts, it would seem that getting to the desktop "app" by default will indeed be possible. This build is not complete (feature and function-wise), but will provide developers and hardware OEMs access to all of the "big hitter" features so they can start getting software and hardware ready. Hence, this current build actually makes sense as the types of hardware and software that would be lacking at launch would be the tablet-style hardware and applets, not desktop PCs or desktop PC software.
