Can I install to an external USB drive? As in to be able to boot and run it from it?

I am a little unsure if you mean to Install windows 8 from a USB drive or actually run the OS from a pen drive?

If you do mean install from USB drive then this guide should do the trick:

Sorry i can't be of more help with actually running Windows 8 from the pen drive

Can't Install it

I played with a GUI pack a couple of weeks ago and I found it to be awful.

I can't install it in VMware Workstation.

I am quite taken aback at the number of people posting here who don't understand that this is not a fully-functioning OS, and that it's target audience with the current design is developers and OEMs, not consumers (and as such, it's going to have silly things that will affect usability - this build doesn't care about that, it cares about giving devs and OEMs a platform to start building things against).

I am also a little surprised at all the negative comments, this is a pre-beta, unpolished, platform for the sole purpose of getting developers to make apps for the Windows 8 tablet Metro UI.
If there are no apps for the Win8 tablet - metro, it will fail.

There are thousands of Windows 7/8 laptop/desktop apps already, I didn't expect them to focus on the laptop/desktop, yet.
I sincerely hope they do a lot more work on it and think they will.

I'm not sold on windows 8 in it's present form, but think it has definite possibilities.
If it is more customizable, turn off Metro and the choice of keep other functions, have a legacy Win7 start menu option, a much better way to switch between desktop and metro, then they will please most people.

Choices are what everyone wants, and should get.

i am using it right now and its bloody fast! I am kinda liking new start menu and loving new task manager! It seems to run faster than 7 with apps and crap XD only crash so fare is skype when it is logging in!

Brink already has a tutorial for installing Windows 8 on a VirtualBox VHD.

If I was going to make separate partitions, I would just dual boot, that's just me.
VB just uses you current disk space, you can choose which partition if you have more than one.
I'm running Win8 on my SSD with one Win7 partition.

It should prompt you right after you select custom/advanced install just the same as 7.

I installed it on a separate hard drive and have a dual boot with my Win 7. First impression is "ugh" - and this is from someone that spent their entire working career in computers (since 1962) and is conditioned to accepting change. I've never given any previous OS an "ugh". This "apps icons" as used for a phone is OK (I have an Android phone) but not for a Desktop production computer.

I'll reserve any more than the "ugh" until I have more time to work with it.

Of course you have an image on an external drive?

I used acronis 2012 to clone my win 7 disk to another disk and then booted that disk. And then ran the upgrade.

works but not many of my old programs would work. Can't seem to find office 2010 anywhere on the disk.
But then I guess I will wait for the real beta..

I used a similar method. This is the simplest I've seen to not use a virtual machine app or installing directly to your machine (as primary OS).

I think it should be able to be outside of your smaller partition. Besides, among the last steps is to set the boot data. At first, I thought this was too simple to work as easy as it does.

well after a couple of hours playing ,i think it is really nice, its very fast and im not sure about all the apps but several of them are good and i have figured out how to pin my firefox to the start page so thats a bonus,
the weather app is nice after puting in my reigon i have a animated beach scene quite nice
