"Windows 8 Survey: Half Who Have Tried the OS Wouldn't Recommend It"

See MS is trying to compete solely with android/iOS for the tablet market and that in my view is a good thing.MS has years of desktop OS experience behind them.
They lost that fight by being slow and refusing to adapt to the times.
During the time it took for Windows to adapt to the market, Android, iPhone OS and iOS came out. yes, I know that technically the last two are the same, but they are 2 different OS' from the same developer.

Meanwhile, Win Mobile 6 was still forcing users to use an old school, archaic system.
Then they released Win Mobile 7, which was pretty widely rejected. Why? Because Microsoft had let themselves get too far behind in the game.
Their answer? Win 8. Force everyone to use an interface that nobody wants to. It's a numbers game, really, one that they're going to lose.

Because we saw MS put many technological improvements from Win7 into Vista's SP's, ideally 7 will benefit similarly from these desktop improvements (e.g Explorer copy function below) for quite a few years.

Capture.PNG

MS has said that Win7 expiry is 2020, from what I heard at MVP Summit. It may well feel old then to most. It's taken quite a while for XP to feel old, then ancient - but it still doesn't to many.

After release of 8 though 7 will merely go into maintenance mode, so no I don't think it'll get any backported feature improvements like the disk copy or explorer UI improvements. It just means that they will maintain bug and security fixes till then as well as OEM sales to corporate customers.

Windows 8 will be nice /if/ they give us the start menu option. I WANT to use metro /where/ I want to use it and I want to completely banish it where I don't. Pretty simple, and given a 50/50 positive/negative response to the CP it would seem like that would be the only sensible thing they could do.

Can Microsoft be sensible? Make both sides happy? Keep all their customers? We'll see :)

I think sticking with 7 Untill otherwise would be the best plan

Im not friendly to touch screens either because either the calibration sucks or it just doesnt do what you want it to do ,also touch screens go bad too fast

It's nice what they are trying to prove but i just think there trying to compete with Iphones and macbooks which many swear by because they feel WinOs's are too complicated

Which isn't true most people you talk to about any tech stuff get annoyed because there phone will not have signal or they just dont get how to use it and curse the day they bought it

I still like hands on and if this is going to be a problem in the future because they want to make it all touch screens ill be looking for another Os that will not use touch screen or even cloud

Only cloud i like is steam other then that im not into leaving my whole person at there disposal

If i ignored metro (believe me thats all i did) i felt i was downloading windows 7 sp2.
Underneath improvements where great, explorer update, iso & a doc reader built in, but it will not get the attention because of Metro.

I agree, most everything at the desktop level was pretty nice, I liked the UI improvements there, to task manager etc. We just need to be able to trade over to the normal start menu at the users choice and it'll be a nice Win7 upgrade.

I also totally agree. I wouldn't mind Win8 so much if it was not of Metro. Built-in PDF, new Task Manager and Ribbon in Windows Explorer is enough to make me pay up. But, if the way it is right now : Metro by default, mouse gestures, no start menu... I'll just stick with Win7 of which is doing juuuuust fine. Fast and handy, like I love it.

Time to say it again just in case it needs to be said: Win7 is the best OS ever and may be one of the greatest achievements in tech history. I believe it saved the company from early Vista, whose own saving improvements came from Win7.

The improvements for the desktop experience in Win8 can be added in the next SP. Desktop users don't need buttons.

Another good point. In fact, if it would be possible to even buy those improvement, for say 50$, I would totally pay up. It's true indeed that those features could be implemented in the current Win7.

At the same time... it totally defeats the purpose of a new system :\

I mean this will all due respect - I think you're being optimistic; God bless you. But Microsoft is not in the habit of seeing the light, curse them :D

Once they make a decision to go a particular way they seem to lose sight of what their customers really want. Selective blindness, mutism and deafness..

It would be saying, "Hey, we have a newer and faster version of Windows than Windows 7, but it looks the same and acts the same and does the same thing as before, but faster!"

That's exactly what Business Managers, IT & Network Administrators want to hear.
It means improved productivity and ROI.

They don't want to hear:

  • "All of our staff are going to have to be retrained."
  • "We are going to need more staff for the Help desk."
  • "We are going to have to buy new touchscreen-compatible hardware."

Hi there

wow..... long discussions from senior members i've been SR-ing all you guys tutorials from vistaforum till now for half a year...

hvnt tried windows 8 myself. just moved to windows 7 a month ago from vista. (>__<)

but, i couldnt believe the not-recommended opinions i've read here... so the tech-literate people in this forum have interesting opinions on windows 8.

i just butt in to say that.... in indonesia big cities, the young tech-literate people who've tried windows 8 consumer preview, largely likes it, so.... i guess, in a way, MS is doing smthn rite in sense that they've appealed to the advanced-user of indonesians...

which is why... i was surprised.

*by advance and tech-literate i mean, end-users using personal computer at home with all softwares and google tips/tweaks kind of way, not like you guys programmer/registry hack/architecture advanced kinda way*

Are they using touchscreens?

We're not hearing much from those who are using WIn8 as apparently intended on touch screens.

Anyone?

Probably because the touch screen devices won't start rolling with Win 8 until after it's released?

Win8 is clearly meant for touch screens. There are PC touchscreens out there. How does your new OS run?

I've got tons of touchscreens (Used to work for a touchscreen company for 15 years) but no 24in ones. And on the desktop, one simply does not touch their screen. Trying to clean a large monitor every day after gooping it up with smudges and smears? Ok for a phone or even a tablet. But a large monitor with tons of text or trying to do phtotoshop work though finger smudges? Plus having to constantly reach across the desk to get to it? No thank you.

The metro/touch UI is simply NOT appropriate for any sort of serious desktop use. Tablet yes, surfboards yes, desktop no. Hello Microsoft! :)

(And as for the supposed new finger smudge proof touch surfaces... well I'll believe that when I see it!)

So I loaded Win8 again in VBox and again I don't like it. I was loading some stuff and get "Close all open programs before continuing" - riiiight...Win8 left 6 things running with NO "close" button for ANY of them.

THAT alone is a deal breaker for me but that is only one of many reasons I don't like this release.

I'll try the next release candidate and pray it improves.

GEWB

And another thing....

I just had an afterthought from my previous post. What will happen if you install a large number of programs? With no start menu to organize it - you will have a lot of screen scrolling to do to get to them. I agree with the earlier post that mentioned that for desktop and laptop touchscreens your arm will get mighty tired trying to navigate thru the metro interface. Two big reasons to stay with Windows 7.

Yup, a problem for me, too. One of my Win7 boxes has well over one hundred Start Menu entries.

So far in Win8 I haven't found a way to consolidate the HUGE icon items. I loaded Office 2010 Pro and everything has its own icon hanging out on the menu - what a mess!

Not only that, I can't move the icons to a screen location and have them stay put - Win8 thinks it knows a better location for them...NOT!

Goodness I'm beginning to real hate Win8, not just dislike it. I hope the next RC is better.

GEWB

You CAN organise the new start screen just like you could organise the old start menu... One thing that would help with the clutter would be if you could collapse the organisational sections. Like click on the title and expand/collapse that section...
