Windows 98SE in VitualBox help

I am currently trying to install Windows 98SE in VitualBox so I can play games that I can't even get to run in XP Mode that were originally made for 3.1/95/98. I have set up a VM with 64MB of RAM and a 2GB Hard Drive, but I can't figure out how to install Windows 98 from the disc. All I see is this:



I'm completely new to VitualBox and anything I find online is written by people that know what they are doing and assume readers know what they are doing. I, obviously, don't know what I am doing. Any help is appreciated.

Do you have a bootable ISO of Windows 98? If so you need to set the advanced option in VB to boot from the CD/DVD first. You will also need to load the ISO under the advanced CD options.

I have a 98 disc. Do I need to convert into a ISO with ImgBurn?

Okay. I have a bootable ISO. I have the vitual hard drive formated as FAT32. The only thing I can't make happen is have Windows 98SE install. The prompt says that the cd drive is E:. But when I try "E:\setup", as discribed on the MS website, nothing happens. Any clue whats going on?

Let me install it and i'll give it a try. I've had it installed so I know it works

only win98se is a bootable disc i think. If you have the disc, just put in in your cd drive and set it to boot the cd drive first in vbox system options for your win98 guest. If your disc in not bootable, you need to install dos first, then install from the win98 cd.

I've stumbled uppon some issues with Running Win98 using the standard setup. It involves booting an MSDOS floppy disk and forcing ACPI support uppon installing Windows 98. Once done i'll get a tutorial up for it detailing exactly how to do it.

There is 1 already Here which could help you in the mean time but I can add images to spruce things up

I had download a different ISO and its installing now. I've read that it runs slow but that should be managable.

Can you show me a snip of your settings screen? See if i've missed anything

In settings you have to turn off acceleration under the system tab. I read that when I was first looking into this. A few people on another forum site were all telling some to turn acceleration off for it to run.

I don't have any Acceleration options in the 'System' section

I've seen the posts you mean and they do mention it, I just don't have that option. I'm running 3.2.10

I did not use those options when installing, so that may be it.

How to you access shared folders? I'm trying to run a program I have the files for saved to the host, that I intend to run on the guest, but I can't figure out how to transfer the install files.

6. Shared Folders
Since VirtualBox shared folders won't work, there are other ways, such as SMB/Windows File Sharing. Recommended for Windows hosts.

(Tested with VBox 2.1.2.-- and was successful with "bridged" network. I had no success with NAT.)
WARNING: I admit that with VirtualBox the network is very unstable, presumably due to very slow performance of Win 9x guests under VBox.

For Unix hosts, WinSCP is recommended.

Another way of read-only file sharing is to create a virtual CD-ROM *.iso file on the host and insert it into the guest VM.

Good news is I've got further in the install now. Bad news is I keep getting blue screen exceptions with an option to continue or not, when I continue all seems fine

I have no clue what your problem might be. To get the files I needed I realized I could just use ImgBurn to put the files into an ISO and copy them that way. Thank you for all your help on this.

I installed it from the CD yesterday via VMware player - There must be some 98 nostalgia going around
