Contact HP and see how much a set of Recovery media for the machine would cost - then ask for that as the refund.

Hi there.

"A recovery disc is a general term for media containing a backup of the original factory condition or a favored condition of a computer as configured by an original equipment manufacturer or an end-user."

With the Recovery media from HP, you will be able to reset OS to the defaults, and OS would be licensed.

This basically means that you payed for the license two times, first when you bought laptop, and second when you purchased this recovery media.

1) Yes, the Recovery media will reformat and reinstall Windows as it came out of the factory - the difference between Recovery Media and normal retail media is that the Recovery disk contains an embedded Product Key, valid ONLY on that manufacturer's machines. It also contains the necessary licenses to be able to self-activate properly on every boot so long as the SLIC table in the BIOS is properly functional (from the MGADiag report, yours appears to be)

2) Manufacturers are not supposed to make profit from the sale of recovery media - the price is supposed only to cover the cost of the media and the admin cost of distribution. This means that you are NOT buying a second license, merely the means to utilise the first one properly.

I am just wondering how he will be able to get the Recovery media from HP if he had bought this laptop from Cash Converter.
He is not the first owner of the laptop, and who knows where this laptop is register and to which company.
I would be very careful with this, it might be stolen or something.

HP don't usually ask too many questions - they just ship the disks.

The only time people usually query it is if the machine is still in warranty.
