About to just move on
I tried a repair install but still was unable to setup my Windows Backup. The only thing that works is a clean install but since the only problem I am having with Windows 7 Pro is configuring Windows Backup, I don't want to take that route. I can use Acronis True Image instead. It just bugs me to no end that I am unable to figure this problem out. I have tried all the suggestions on the web that I could find like resetting the backup registry fix, running scanow's, a few safe mode suggestions and anything else that was recommended. None worked.
Here are a few new things I have noticed since my original post reporting my problem.
1. Windows backup IS NOT in my Windows Services list so I can't start, stop or set it to manual mode if requested.
2. My Windows Action Center icon in the system tray shows that Windows not being backed up is a PC Issue. If I try to set up the backup through the Windows Action Center instead of the control panel, I get as far as the "save settings and run backup" box but when I click on the box I get a message that says "The specified service does not exist as an installed service(0x80070424). At least this is further then I get when starting Windows Backup through the control panel. I don't get past clicking on the dead "Set Up Backup" button there.
I tried uninstalling Acronis True Image since it appears to be the default backup program and thought maybe it was locking out Windows Backup from setting up but that didn't make a difference. I am using Avast for my anti-virus software. I checked out all my third party software and could not find any of the programs installed that are listed on the Internet as causing problems with Windows 7. I feel that the problem lies in something I have installed but I can't go back far enough like Ryan7 did and do a step install until I find the program. This problem has been going on longer then my backups will let me restore to.
I'm about ready to click the "Turn Off Messages about Windows Backup" issue in the Windows Action Center to get rid of that continuing message and just move on and forget about Windows Backup & Restore and just use Acronis. It's just not worth going all the way back to a clean install to fix. I just hate to admit this problem beat me. Maybe down the road I will stumble across the culprit causing this.
