Windows causes corruption of HDD video files by error checking.

Windows 7 is constantly is wanting to error check my external HDD which contains videos. If I allow it, the video files will become corrupted and unreadable. I suspect windows does this automatically sometimes.

How to I stop/disable windows from doing this error checking?

Regarding the above tutorial....kind of sort of. When I type chkntfs g: (for the HDD) it says the drive is "dirty" and encourages to use a command to schedule a cleaning. If I do that, more videos will be corrupted.

Anyone else? This is a serious problem. Windows keeps trying to error check this disk and only causes damage to the files.

I'm concerned that your drive is dying. Copy all of YOUR files to a new drive, also make a backup of the entire drive. Have your Windows and applications disks at the ready. Run the disk manufacturer's diag program and see what it finds.

After doing the above, hold your breath and let Windows churn away.

Thank for the advise......This external HDD is only a year old, and it wants to error check my other external HDD too. Both could be failing,

Desktop? Laptop? If desktop, reSeat anything and everything while the power is off, leaved plugged in for that 3rd ground.
If laptop, consider carefully opening laptop and carefully reSeating the HD and memory [since you're there]. Be careful not to break any ribbon connectors, such are easy to do.
