Hello,

I have bee trying to solve this problem for a few hours now. When I select "check for updates" in Windows Update it gives me the error mentioned in this thread's title (I've attached the screen shot). I tried to do the sfc scan but my command prompt box (after entering "sfc /scannow") says that it is unable to start the repair service.
I made the zipped CBS file but it looks like your size limit for that is 8MB and mine is 10.6MB. If there is another way I can get it to you please let me know.

I've tried checking to make sure that windows update is running in 'services' and I've also tried changing the settings to "never update" and then back again and it didnt work. I even tried a couple system restores (which I later undid because they didnt work). I'm a bit confused because (as you can see in the screen shot) it says the most recent check for updates was November 2013, but then it says right under that that updates were installed today.

I would really like to fix this but I'm a vet student and midterms are in 2 weeks and I cant afford to spend hours tinkering (although I cant afford to have my computer malfunctioning either). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The Farbar Scanner tests for the WU setting - and it is correct, and running or we'd have seen an error message.

The default setting for the Windows Modules Installer (AKA TrustedInstaller) is MANUAL, not Automatic - it is only switched to automatic by Windows itself, for the exclusive purpose of completing installs across a reboot, and then switched back to Manual at the end of the process. There is NO NEED to change the setting from Manual to start the service - but attempting to start it *may* give us something if it fails.

There are no problems showing in the report.

This means that some other service is affected - I am going to take a flying leap into the dark, and say it's something to do with the Software Protection Service.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

NET START SPPSVC
SC QC SPPSVC
SC QUERYEX SPPSVC
NET START SPPUINOTIFY
SC QC SPPUINOTIFY
SC QUERYEX SPPUINOTIFY

post the results...

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Hello, Sorry for the delay - my computer was doing a full scan for viruses (none) in the tutorial suggested by archer above. Unfortunately Update is still not working. Noel, here are the results of the commands you sent earlier:

That output looks normal.
Perhaps I should explain a little - the 422 error you are getting is defined as 'service unable to start' - the trick is to find which service, and why it isn't starting.

We'll have to delve a little into the event logs, as they may be the only way we'll find out...

Please open Event Viewer
In the left pane, navigate to the Windows Logs
right-click on Applications and select 'Save all events as...' save as Apps.evtx
repeat for the System logs - save as Sys.evtx
Compress both files, and attach to your reply or upload to your favourite fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive/SkyDrive) and post a link in your reply

The NLS can't start, because the Network Location Awareness service can't start....
Now I have to find out why NLA can't start :) :(

There may be a clue or three there - but to be honest, the event logs are a mess :(

I'm starting to think in terms of a repair install.

Hi,
It's weird, but the "tip" you posted with "download windows repair tool" doesnt show up in your post when I open this thread on my computer, but it does show up when I open the thread on my phone...

Anyway I downloaded the registry reviver that it linked to and it showed several errors but it wants me to buy the full version for $30 in order to fix them - is that what you're recommending I do?

This happens when you are not logged in to SevenForums. I get fooled too sometimes. Certain words get tagged by adverts when you are not logged in to the forums.

This is probably why you didn't see it on your computer (logged in) but did see it on your phone (not logged in).

A rule of thumb: most members include the application name in their post if they recommend software utilities.
An advert tags keywords (driver, repair, etc).

It's best to log in to avoid any confusion.
