Wondering what others feel about this. Is it beneficial, necessary, or just useless over kill to run both avg free, and windows defender at the same time? I usually run one of the other, or another app like avira. I have been running windows 7 for almost 2 months now with nothing but windows defender, and have had no issues. I installed avg, ran a scan, and it found nothing..

Any advice appreciated!!

I'd look into something more highly rated than AVG for starters, like MSE or Avira. MSE will disable Defender anyway, which is fine because it does a great job of scanning for viruses and malware. Then, for a manual scanner, Malwarebytes makes a great one. It catches and cleans things that SpyBot and SuperAntiSpyware don't.

Defender and AVG (8.5)

I have the Windows Defender service disabled on bootup. No problems to date with only AVG 8.5 running. Also with defender disabled the defender service no longer has to run all of the time saving some CPU cycles.

About once a month I activate/start the windows defender service, check for defender updates (note there is a separate check within defender for updates), and run a full scan. I then disable defender for another month.

Also, I download the Microsoft malicious software tool monthly update (second Tuesday) and run it http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.aspx)

Cheers!

musiclover7,
Depends your level of activity on the Internet. I'd suggest keeping both because there's never enough security.

Defender is a good product for the average joe to have, because it's already there, and updates via Windows Update. However, for a power user, or someone who would remember to manually scan, there are better alternatives. Malwarebytes has been the only software for me that completely removes the Personal Anti-Virus outbreaks my father-in-law seems to keep getting.

I use Avira, malwarebytes and cookienator along with Tuneup utilities 2010, it keeps my pc working like a champion. Everyone has there own preference.

You do not need to run windows defender when you have a decent anti-virus. Try avira.

Mind personal preference.

1. benefits of running windows defender:
Windows Defender integrates with Internet Explorer , guards its settings , monitors the system for changes such as new driver/service installation and start-ups , monitors executables , monitors the memory directly .

In addition , it gets regular updates from Microsoft - automatically about twice per week ; manually - new updated can be installed more than once per day. WD is light on resourses , doesn't conflict with other AVs. it offers light HIPS protection too in Spynet mode....with an advanced membership.

2. is it needed ? :
not really if you have a good av...like nav/mse/nod/avast etc...because these cover most bases esp when coupled with things like mbam/winpatrol/hiitman etc

3.ummm...with Avg:
honestly i don't see a downside in running WD with AVG but i see a lot of downsides of running AVG :p

if your avg protects against malware or spyware then no, although I've never notice a speed increase when disabling it either.

musiclover,

To give a quick answer to your specific question - I would say it will not hurt to use both. It may prove beneficial.

If your surfing habits are circumspect, you have a firewall [hardware, software] & continue with what you are currently using, your anti virus scans probably won't find intrusions.
BTW Is UAC on?
