Each day for the past 10 days I keep getting the same update notice: Important Update; Definition Update for Windows Defender KB915597. The first few times I installed it, but then discovered it was the same one each day. How to stop receiving this? And why is it happening?

KB915597 updates the list of bad things to look for.

If you use Windows Defender OR Microsoft Security Essentials, you should install KB915597 every time it is offered.

It's rather hard to believe that that has to be updated EVERY day?

Yep, it's not unusual to have 2-3 Windows Defender definition updates per day.

Some people check for updates each hour.

Panda's estimate is 225k per day:

Panda Security detects over 225,000 new malware strains per day in the first quarter of the year - MediaCenter Panda Security

Other sources claim more than a 1 million new malware files appear in the wild each day.

There are computers that do nothing but crank out variations on a theme. They try to make an old infection escape detection. That is why heuristics is so important. Sadly, MSE has poor heuristics.
