Hello,

is the Windows defrag running in idle?
I think it is a new feature since Vista right?

I have checked it and my sytem drive is 16% fragmented. I have waited with performance monitor on for an half hour and there where no harddisk access from defrag?

Any ideas?

It normally runs according to a schedule that you can control.

What does your schedule say?

I haven't defragged manually in over a year---my fragmentation is reported at 0 and has never been above 5.

Is your disk defragmenter service set to manual, auto, or what?

Hi,

the service was set to manual, i have changed it to auto.
I have found that: Use Task Scheduler To Tweak Automatic Disk Defragmentation In Windows 7/Vista

i have changed the trigger to idle and now i am looking whats happening.

Why onfigure the service to start automatically? It's started automatically when the scheduled task starts. Or when you manually defrag using GUI.

Start the scheduled task (right click on it and click Run). Now open defrag GUI and see if it's running. Is it? In task scheduler you can also seen "next time" it runs, and if last time was succesfully.

All about "idle" what it actually means http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa383561%28VS.85%29.aspx

With a 16% fragmentation it sure doesn't sound like any defrag is occuring.
The only time I have experienced that is through running VMware. you don''t I suppose ?

microsoft says idle is 0% cpu and 0% hdd access. i think that is a value thats hard to reach?

what do you mean with vmware?
i have vmware workstation installed! but only running 2 times a week.

Detecting the Idle State

The Task Scheduler service will verify that the computer is in an idle state every 15 minutes.
The computer is considered idle if all the processors and all the disks were idle for more than 90% of the past 15 minutes and if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. Besides, any presentation type application that sets the ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED flag will make Task Scheduler to not consider the system as being idle.
In Windows 7, Task Scheduler considers a processor as idle even when low priority threads (thread priority < normal) execute.
When the Task Scheduler service detects that the computer is idle, the service only waits for user input to mark the end of the idle state.

Ibaxx,

Percentage of fragmentation is sometimes misleading, although probably not in your case.

MS seems to use the total size of your disk, irregardless of what percent is being used, in calculating the percentage of fragmentation. The same quantity of fragmentation on a small drive gives a much bigger percentage than on a large drive.

Although CONTIG doesn't provide a graphic interface, contig will give you some statistics as to how many files were/are fragmented and the number of fragments.

CONTIG is a utility from the SysInternals group at Microsoft.

run cmd.exe as administrator and enter following:
contig -s -q c:\*

will defrag your entire c: which will take awhile the first go around.
the -s tells contig to defrag subdiretories and the -q says quietly (no running display of file being defragged)

Contig

Hey,

the fact is that i want a automatic defragmentation that doesn´t work!

Contig is also a program that doesn´t work without user maintenance?

Why not let it run without checking for idle state?

without alter the defragmentation setting the task was never running!

I think somethin on my system prevents this task?

change the scheduled task to start next time. Set it so that it starts in 5 minutes. And set "history on for scheduled" tasks (at least temporary)

Now wait half an hour or so. now resfresh the screen and look at the history, next start time, last execution result

Do you anything interesting?

Dikd you wait at least 15 minutes so that it gets in idle state, and even more

VMware files, which are quite large for a guest system are left as they are by defragging, so they tend to cause fragmentation. Try moving the installation and OS files to another drive, or create a smallish partition to keep it on.
Then defrag and you'll see the difference.

i have triggered it for whent it is one minute idle! wating for on imidiatly.

i think that should be enough!
i have tried auslogics defrag meanwhile! when i set this defrag to run in idle in 1 minute, it works!

but auslogics defrag did not use the prefetch and superfetch features

is an entry from the moment i have startet it manual.

Ingo

Did you ever try to run it manually/immediate as Kaktussoft asked in Post #4?

Start the scheduled task (right click on it and click Run). Now open defrag GUI and see if it's running. Is it? In task scheduler you can also seen "next time" it runs, and if last time was succesfully.
What happened? Any Error messages? Anything in History? Any Event errors?
