Solved Windows Disk Defragmenter vs defragmentation softwares

Should i use window tool or any other software (if so please suggest both free and paid)

And after how long should we do defragmentation.

I use and suggest that you try Ausglogics. It is one of the best defraggers. It has an analyze feature that shows how much needs to be defragged. It is suggested to wait until it reaches about 10%

You're not likely to notice any difference between them. You rarely hear of anybody complaining about one of them like you hear about anti-virus applications.

Windows built-in defragger rarely lets my hard drives get beyond 3% fragmented. They usually show zero percent.

Before defragging became automated, I occasionally would let my drives get to 20% fragmentation and never noticed any deterioration in performance.

Use whatever best relieves your anxiety and worry, assuming you understand it and can configure it properly.

Windows defrager does a fine job and it is a weekly sheducled task to keep your drive(s) well organized. There really isn't a need for manual defragmentation or 3rd party utilities (although I use Piriform Defaggler when my system "seems" sluggish).

There have been many good suggestions given. Decide on the method that is best for you. Use that method consistently, do not use a software to defrag today and another tomorrow. It is best use defrag software consistently and not constantly switch. They all use slightly different methods to defrag.

I use the built in Windows 7 defragger. It was made by Diskeeper for Microsoft.
Their have been post on this forum where a 3rd party defrag disabled Restore Points on some systems.
No I'm not going to hunt down the threads.

I use Piriform Defraggler because it is a one pass defrag. MS defrag is multi-pass and might require multiple runs.

The 'no need statement' basically says that MS defrag does it's job, albeit the minimum. Most, if not all utilities use the MS defrag API, so it's only a matter of implementation.

There's always been great debate about the value of defrag (to defrag or not to defrag ... that is the question ..). I have slow drives 5400 RPM and periodic full defrag (multiple MS defrag or a single Piriform Defraggler) does improve my disk performance, based on read write throughput. Faster drives (7200 RPM)show less performance improvement.

If my disk gets above 5% defrag, I run Piriform Defraggler and forget about it until I notice or perceive a slow down. Defrag is just one place I look - what's running in the background is the first place (did something get into startup???)

You can configure MS defrag to run when you want - it doesn't consume too many resources, but you want to run in when there is little disk activity.

I would like to add to the excellent answer above. Many at this Forum agree that Defragller is one of the best. It is known by most that any defragger will do the job, but best too use the same one for each defrag. Shut off MS defrag if using any others.

With the Windows Defrag Task if a scheduled start is missed the the task will run later when the PC is on.
The Defrag Task only runs when the PC is idle.
If the PC becomes not idle the Defrag will stop, and restart later when the PC is idle.

Is 'moving system files to beginning of disk' really important? how about disk speedmap? defrag & optimize? smells like snake oil :sarc:

That's what I miss in Piriform.

What it does is move files so they are in the right place, taking less time for the computer to do its thing.
Not just the system files.

The choice to replace native utilities is up to each user. I choose to keep native utilities in place and supplement them on an as needed basis with one additional utility.

There are many things to consider with a defrag utility such as the feature set.
Piriform's set includes:
only free space
only folders
only fragmented files
move large files to end of disk (another defrag utility will move them to where it thinks is best)
turn off VSS
skip hibernation and restore points (turns out that the process of defragging might delete restore points - even MS defrag)

I'm sure that other utilities by different publishers provide a rich set as well.
