Solved Windows Explorer Crashes When Copying Files. Shell Extensions??

Hi woodbine,

Well, I've solved the problem with your help - for which I'm eternally grateful. MyWinLocker was causing the problems - specifically the shell extensions. Seems to be a known problem with this program and Acer computers especially.

Many thanks again for your continued help, really above and beyond.

You are most welcome!

Revo is an excellent tool, and the scan afterwards shows that usual uninstall processes aren't always that good. This problem has now made me look at the programs that came with the pc, and made me realise that there is probably a load more junk on there to get rid of.

Yes, I have used it for many years and it really does get rid of all those leftover bits that the built in un-installers leave behind.

I strongly recommend that if you are going to get rid of further unwanted software that you make a system image before you start. This way, if things go wrong, you will be able to restore your OS back to the exact same state that it is now in a very short time. There are two imaging programs which are very popular among members here, the first is AOMEI Backupper Standard [FREE], and the second is Macrium Reflect [FREE].

I hope this helps!

Hi Paul

Yes, I will definitely make a system image before I do anything. Maybe I should put up a list of the programs that I should bin. Seems like Acer put lots of nonsense in the package, stuff like Cake Mania, Chicken Invaders 2, Dairy Dash, Dream Day First Home, Ebay Worldwide, Farm Frenzy 2, Granny In Paradise, Heroes Of Hellas, etc, etc. Sounds like kids games which have never been used. Probably other stuff too.

One other thing, maybe it's my imagination, but my pc seems to run faster since Winlocker has gone.

It's not just Acer, it's all the manufacturers that include this type of useless junk unfortunately, it's a way of keeping the price of the computer down. The thing is, with all this extra software, a lot of it gets run at specific times and frequencies due to the fact that there are tasks included for triggering things like checking for updates etc. This can slow down the computer and cause problems, as you well know! Some of these are also included in the Startup, which again slows down the computer because they have all got to be pre-loaded before you end up at the desktop.

When I got my Fujitsu, my first task was to wipe it clean and do a clean install [I always do this with new computers anyway]. It did however, come with a bit of software to purely update the drivers etc for my particular computer. I checked the manufacturers website and found that they had a newer version [no surprise there], which they would do because it depends on when my computer was built and how long it had been sitting in the shop. I then wiped it and clean installed ending up with a nice clean, fast machine.

Yes, it probably does because you haven't got that running in the background now!

I hope this helps!
