Windows Explorer keeps crashing despite repair install

Hi all,

I'm looking for some assistance. I posted a while ago regarding this issue and I thought I had managed to find the source however, the problem has re-emerged again. I had submitted another update on my previous thread but haven't received any feedback from the guy who was providing help.

In summary, Windows Explorer regularly crashes - when I say regularly, I mean every time i access windows explorer.

I completed a repair install and thought this fixed the issue but it hasn't.

The crash is not related to any particular folder - it can happen when accessing My Docs or Prog Files, or any other folder.

I have also tried setting up a new profile but this didn't work.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance for any assistance offered.

I didn't read the 132 pages of your original thread. Do you have a restore point before this happened?
Try http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html#post14392 reboot, repeat 3 times if you get errors.

Thanks for the reply.

I ran sfc previously and it identified several files which could not be repaired. I then completed a repair install of windows 7. However, the problem reappeared.

I will run it again and get back to you.

Hi Britton,

I ran sfc 4 times (just to be sure) and it didn't find any issues, I get the message saying "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".

A few months ago when I first scanned it found lots of corrupted files etc, which couldn't be repaired, hence I had to re-installed windows.

This time around it all seems OK.

Is there anything else I can try? Where do I go from here?

You can try these:
Some hardware tests to run.

Graphics card:
Video Card Stress Test with Furmark

Hard drive(s):
Pick one for your HDD brand or use Seatools.
7 Free Hard Drive Testing Software Tools


RAM (memory):
This will require memtest on a bootable CD or USB stick.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Hi Britton,

I've completed the tests and found nothing.

I have run malwarebytes - found nothing serious/high risk
I ran avast and and found a 'virus' and moved this to the vault
I ran kaspersky virus scanners but that found no viruses and only vulnerabilities with java and macromedia. I have since uninstalled java.

Even after running the above the problem still exists.

Any ideas what I should try next?

I don't have Java installed either, good idea.
All I can think of is to do a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html#post31238 Which is non-destructive. You will have to re-do windows updates though, I recommend 4-5 at a time with a reboot between them.

I have already tried this and it didnt work. It did repair the files sfc couldnt repair but still left me with windows explorer crashing.

Its driving me insane.

After checking for infection here are other Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

Nothing can compare however to getting a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
which steps are the same for retail.

I'm not sure that this very patient OP (e.g. no bumping) is seeing a BSOD (despite the fact that the post is in the BSOD sub-forum).

My guess is that the OP has an app or infection that is taking down explorer at random times. Would such a crash make dump files?

Ops, my misunderstanding. I thought it would since it handles nearly everything on the PC. A program crash will at least show up in the system log. Explorer starts at Windows' boot as part of Session 0 initialization (system) and before any user initialization (Session 1). I guess I need a definition of the OP's term of "crash". Is the system freezing with a screen showing or is it black?

Well, skip that. I see that it's Windows Explorer and not the service Explorer.

Dont forget this sub forum used to be crashes and debugging when the OP started the thread, John renamed this sub forum to BSOD recently
