Windows Explorer Toolbar Buttons - Customize

How to Add, Remove, or Rearrange Command Bar Buttons in Windows 7 Explorer

   Information
This will show you how to customize the command bar (toolbar) in Windows Explorer to add, remove, or rearrange command bar buttons of your choice for all users in Windows 7.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do this tutorial.

EXAMPLE: Windows Explorer Command Bar
Toolbar.jpg

OPTION ONE

To Add and Remove Command Bar Buttons using "Explorer Toolbar Editor" Program

NOTE: Explorer Toolbar Editor helps you add or remove buttons from the Windows Explorer toolbar in Windows 7. Explorer Toolbar Editor supports multiple folder types and displays the current set of buttons for each one. Also, you can use it to reorder the toolbar buttons.
1. Download, install, and run Explorer Toolbar Editor.
NOTE: Detailes instructions for how to use the program are at the site's download link below.

Download

OPTION TWO

To Add and Remove Command Bar Buttons using "Custom Explorer Toolbar" Program

NOTE: This option doesn't have as many folder type options as doing OPTION TWO or OPTION THREE below, but does make it easier do for the folder types included in the program. Custom Explorer Toolbar is small utility for Windows 7 only, which allows you to easily customize the toolbar of Windows Explorer, and add buttons that were existed in previous versions of Windows, like Copy, Cut, Paste, Select All, and more. This utility also allows you to remove the toolbar buttons that you previously added.
1. Download and run CustomExplorerToolbar.exe.

Download

   Note
System Requirements And Limitations
  • This utility only works on Windows 7. It doesn't work on Windows Vista. Both 32-bit and x64 systems are supported.
  • Some buttons might not be displayed on Explorer toolbar, even if you added them with CustomExplorerToolbar tool.
  • Be aware that CustomExplorerToolbar cannot remove the default buttons provided by Windows operating system. It can only remove buttons that you previously added.

OPTION THREE

To Manually Remove Command Bar Buttons in All Windows in Windows Explorer

NOTE: If you want to add, remove, or rearrange command bar buttons in specific windows in Windows Explorer, then do the OPTION THREE section below instead.

   Note
You will not be able to remove the default Burn, Print, E-mail, Play all, and Slide show command bar buttons provide by Windows 7 unless you had previously manually added them, or change the folder template to another one that doesn't have them by default.

If you really wanted to completely remove Burn from the command bar in all windows, then you could disable the built-in burning features in Windows 7.

1. Open the Start Menu, then type regedit in the search box and press enter.
2. If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes.

3. In regedit, navigate to the location below. (see screenshot below)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CommandStore\shell

Permanently_Remove.jpg
4. To Backup the Command Bar Button before Deleting it
NOTE: See the table under step 8 in OPTION THREE below to know what each key below the Shell key is for which command bar button.

   Warning
If you do not backup (export) the key for a command bar button before deleting it in step 5, you will not be able to restore the command bar button again.

A) Under the Shell key in the left pane of regedit, right click on the key (ex: Windows.includeinlibrary) for the command bar button (ex: Include in Library) that you want to remove, and click on Export.

B) Save this .reg file backup to your desktop, then move it to where you like to keep it backed up at.
5. Under the Shell key in the left pane of regedit, right click on the key (ex: Windows.includeinlibrary) for the command bar button (ex: Include in Library) that you want to remove, and click on Permissions.

6. Take ownership of the registry key and set permissions of the key to "Allow" your user account "Full Control" of it. (see screenshot below)
Ownership_Permissions.jpg
7. Under the Shell key in the left pane of regedit, right click on the key (ex: Windows.includeinlibrary) for the command bar button (ex: Include in Library) that you want to remove, and click on Delete. (see screenshot below step 3)

8. Click on Yes to confirm the deletion. (see screenshot below)
Confirm.jpg
9. Repeat steps 4 to 8 for any other command bar buttons that you would like to remove from all Windows Explorer windows.

10. When finished, close regedit.

11. If open, close and reopen Windows Explorer to see the changes applied.

   Note
To Restore a Command Bar Button Deleted in OPTION TWO
1. Double click on the backup .reg file from step 4.

2. If prompted, click on Run, Yes, Yes, and OK to approve merging the .reg file.

3. If open, close and reopen Windows Explorer to see the changes applied.

OPTION THREE

To Manually Add, Remove, or Rearrange Command Bar Buttons in Specific Windows

1. Open the Start Menu, then type regedit in the search box and press enter.
2. If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes.

3. In regedit, navigate to the location below of the Windows Explorer window that you would like to add, remove, or rearrange a command bar button(s) in.

Greetings, is it possible to simply "remove" this "Command Bar"? I like a minimalistic UI and I never use this command bar.

Here's my very simplified hack to remove the "command bar", aka "explorer toolbar", aka "folder band": You need Resource Hacker

First backup, then take ownership and full control of shell32.dll.

Open shell32.dll with Resource Hacker

Go to UIFILE 12 and delete this line (Line 6):

<FolderBandModule ModuleID="FolderBandModule"/>

Click the Compile button.

File > Save
(Note: When you save an edited shell32.dll file, Windows creates a copy of the current file and names it shell32_original.dll. Later, after rebooting, if you want to do more editing, first delete this shell32_original.dll file, or Windows will not allow you to use "File > Save" to keep your new edits.)

Exit ResHacker

Reboot.

Hi, how i can restore default registry settings from this tutorial?I didn't create backup.

Hello Tuck,

I'm assuming you mean from OPTION TWO. If you like, let me know which button(s) you deleted using OPTION TWO, and I could post a REG file with their default registry settings.

You could use the tutorial to add the Windows Explorer buttons that you removed to restore them.

If you do not remember, then you could also do a system restore using a restore point dated before you made the changes to restore them and the registry.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks for reply, confirm, that mentioned second option. Modifying explorer toolbar third time, and stuck with two buttons, email and slide show, that are still appearing even with all buttons removed, from all CLSID's. Try to solve it by myself if you share the registry file.

Sorry, don't have much time.

If I provide a REG file to restore the default entries, it will restore all the buttons. Is that what you were wanting?

Did you try OPTION ONE to see if it may be able to remove those two?

This will be great.

I was trying to use tool from first option, but somehow, its not changed any of buttons, also tried similar tool called Explorer Toolbar Editor, and again no luck. I guess, it might be caused by my windows services configuration. I will check that soon.

Tuck,

Ok mate. Here's the REG file below that will undo OPTION TWO and set the default registry settings back. After downloading, double click on it to merge it, and approve any prompts.

If you get any unsuccessful merge messages, then that is fine. It only means that you didn't change that one and it's permission settings, so it was not able to be merged. That's fine since it's still default anyways.

Hope this helps. :)

Adding a new value data to Registry

Hi Brink, thank you for your interesting topic, and I have an question related to your topic.
I like to add a new value data like Windows.burn,Windows.Copy,... but not exists in the Registry .
For example: I like to add a button in windows explorer toolbar, when it clikcked it show message box or do any action. I like to excute my binary code when the button clicked.

Hello Etosson, and welcome to Seven Forums.

For a custom button that's not already available in this tutorial, you could use the free program Classic Shell to create them. :)

Hope this helps,
Shawn

options for removing default entries (slideshow etc)

Hi

re the above, I believe that, by changing the value of the canonical name of entries in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CommandStore\shell

to "", the unwanted button(s) should disappear from ya command bar...

I just went to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CommandStore\shell\Windows.slideshow

and changed the value of CanonicalName from "{73BCE053-3BBC-4AD7-9FE7-7A7C212C98E6}" to ""

(You need to be the owner of the key. I recommend the free RegTakeOwnership tool).

I've done this (successfully!) with 'new folder', 'share', 'include in library'... but it didn't work with Slideshow. Another search of the reg for the canonicalname in question (73BCE053-3BBC-4AD7-9FE7-7A7C212C98E6)
yields just one result, @

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\CommandStore\shell\Windows.slideshow

After taking ownership and changing the CanonicalName to "", Slideshow is still in the command bar. (grrr)

More soon.

Hello Jonny,

Did you already see if using the program in Option One or Two would make it easier to remove the "Windows Slideshow" command bar button?

cmdStore woes

hey Brink!

I've recently recovered from another digital disaster!

My (VHD) OS is back from the brink!

Some apps being uninstalled, sadly Sandboxie got broken in the process, hopefully it'll reinstall ok...

My command bars were totally fudged, but thankfully I found the selectedItems and noSelectedItems entries for all offending... foldertypes..

I'm wondering if I've deleted some (commandbars!), and if there are any (generic) reg "backup/restore" operations I can do to resolve.

should controlpanel have a commandbar?

kWDYZKI.png

I just manually deleted dozens of child-keys (orphaned AHK entries) from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\, but wonder if I killed any parents, like controlpanel and search... neither has a commandbar

Hello Jonny,

It looks like you have some 3rd party program installed that added the command bar/toolbar since Windows does not have one there by default.

Possibly Classic Shell??

Is it possible to add nav pane to the 'my computer' and 'libraries' command bar(s)?
