Windows Explorer won't remember view settings for SD card

Hi;
this has been frustrating me for so long. When I have Windows (Ultimate SP1 x64) Explorer set up the way I want it - it works fine for the system's drives, but when I plug in my Android phone, all of the view settings come up default and will always do so no matter how many times I try to change it.
I am working with .ogg music files on the phone. Explorer defaults to large icons but I want details, and modified date. So every time I open a new folder I need to set these options. Even while in the same Explorer session, I need to change view settings when I change to a different folder on the phone. And to boot, there is no 'child' functionality, so I cannot just set the parent folder to display options I want, I must drill into each folder and make the changes each time.

Is there any way to change this behaviour?
I have tried 3rd party 'explorer' tools, and had one I liked (I think it was Free Commander) but it had a nasty bug that made it extremely slow to read the phone's SD card.

Thanks for your help

FW

Edit: If I go back to a folder I already set view options for, Explorer will remember then, but only until I close explorer.
Also, the button "Apply to Folders" is always grayed out.
