Hi! I want to format my external HDD in NTFS format but I'm not able to do it. It is getting formatted in fatEX but it is so slow while storing the data on it.
I'm using Win7 Home Basic SP1(32-bit), the external drive is of Samsung(iomega)

diskpart list disk select disk n (where n is the number assigned to your external drive) clean all (will take some time, be patient and wait for it to complete) format fs=ntfs (again, will take a while to complete, so be patient) exit
Finally, close the command prompt.

Because it is the file-format is RAW. You need to create a partition and format it to a fileformat like NTFS.
Go to start, right click on "Computer" and choose "Manage". Choose "Disk Management". If Windows recognizes the drive, a window should popup and will propose to format the drive. If it does, select all the default options and click go.
Otherwise, locate your drive in Disk Management. Right click, then choose Format. Select the default options and hit go.
If everything fails, it means that the drive must be failing... (bad sectors)
(Note : I might not be following this thread in the future)

Thank you Dwarf, for giving the commands required in the elevated cmd to format it. It cleaned all and made it into RAW so that I was able to format it through disk managament which I failed to do before. Increases your REP.
