WINDOWS key to escape game

Playing games "Civilization 4" and "Company of Heroes Legacy Edition" downloaded via Steam. This question has also been posted to the Steam forums.

Using Windows 7 64 bit and latest Google Chrome Browser.

While playing, I am sometimes able to exit the game by simply pressing the "windows" key on my keyboard. This brings me to the desktop, where I usually have a video streaming paused.
I like to go back and forth. Unfortunately, this frequently will not work. I am posting to ask for a workaround to FORCE this to always work.
I sometimes try Windows + D, and that is not any more reliable.

I don't play those games but this is all the keyboard shortcuts for the first-

I don't see where using the "Windows" key is mentioned.

I find pressing ALT + TAB keys a quite reliable way of Exiting any game. Some games use those keys for the in-game inventory, so you may need to configure the in-game keyboard configuration for the shortcut to function as a system command. Also, you may experience a delay before the effect takes place, this delay is usually down to available physical memory. To continue the game, press ALT + TAB again. Pressing Windows Key + TAB also works well in the same situation.

To get shrink the game to do something on the internet or something you can pause your game and click Alt + Tab. Then you will go to your desktop and the game is just shrunk.
