Windows Live Mail Storage Folders......again!!!

I've done well setting up a new computer with Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail and transferring everything from my Windows XP computer with Windows Live Mail.

I run a small business and desperately want to keep everything in my Storage Folder with many client sub-folders on my XP computer.

I have read and read and read for 2 days how to export/import these messages but nothing is working.

I can easily find the file with all my folders in it on the XP but there is nothing within the folders. The messages do exist as they are still there on the Windows Live Mail screen. When I export and try to import on Windows 7 it says the file is empty which of course it is.

I can't help feeling that the actual storage folder emails are kept someplace else that also need to be imported.

This is driving me crazy and all help would be very much appreciated. It's time my life moved on!!!! PS before this computer I wasted a whole day on another computer that ended up having to go back!!!!

I dont like using the storage folders, when I get mail I want to keep, I open it, click file & save as... then put it in an external hdd.

I guess you must be using the 2009 version of WLM on the XP machine.

When you export and import, I assume you realize there is an intermediate storage location where you put the exported files (e.g. an external hard drive). An that you plugged this drive into the new pc and navigated to it from WLM when doing the import process.

Another way to do the export is to look at the options/advanced/maintenance tab/store folder to see where WLM on XP stores your messages, save that folder to the external hard drive, and then use the import feature in WLM on the Windows 7 computer to navigate to it. (In this case if you look at the "Message Store" within Windows Explorer you may not see any messages unless you have the view option set to "view hidden files".)

In any case when you navigate during the import process, you will be navigating to a folder containing sub folders that hold you mail and you must select the folders you want to import. You can select any number of them at a time. When you do the import for the selected folders they should appear as subfolders in the "storage folder" area of WLM.

Omg.......i did it!!!!!

It was a long slog but I finally got there.

I finally traced where one of my latest emails was stored on the XP computer. It was hard to find the FULL FILE NAME as most displays stopped at STORAGE FOLDERS. In fact within STORAGE FOLDERS was a folder called RECOVERED and within that were more folders with folder names of dates and within one of those date folder names(btw, the date on the folder was an old date) I found all my emails that were in my STORAGE FOLDER on Windows Live Mail.

So I copied all the client folders to a CD. Then on the new Windows 7 computer moved them directly from the CD (I did each of my client files separately) into the appropriate STORAGE FOLDER on Windows 7.

What I don`t understand in Windows 7 is how to get into the AppData folder as it doesn`t show up when I look in My Computer. I did eventually get in there but I`ve no idea how I got in there. I would post the full file name if I could find it again.


Oh, and within Windows 7 I found out where to put the new files by creating a new folder within STORAGE FOLDER on the Windows Live Mail Screen and then did a computer search for that new folder that I just created.

So that was it EVENTUALLY!!!!!

It's under Desktop/<username>/appdata. If you start further down in Windows Explorer where it shows the c: drive, it would be found under Computer/c:/users/<username>/appdata. And if you start even further down where it shows your Network it would show up under Network/<computername>/<username>/appdata. In all cases it's one of the subfolders under your username.

I know I was l trying to look at the C: drive when I got in there except it didn't happen immediately and I got confused on what actually happened next!!! Thanks for the help.
