Windows Media Player 10 for 7 x64 ?

Hey
anyone knows if we can install WMP 10 on 7 x64?
I really hate WMP 11 behaviors, I want it to be maximized at all, when opening it, it re-sizes itself to the size of media being played.
Some times, it won't open media files and after a while says: "server execution failed"
I have to re-open the media and it will open this time!
Any Media Library, I hate it, I don't want WMP to be opened always in Library mode, I want it always in Now Playing mode.
And nothing is customizable!

I am not fond of WMP either to be honest. Try the excellent VLC Player -- plays anything u throw at it!

I agree with ManHunter, a third-party media player is probably your best choice. VLC is a good option.

I agree, there are a lot of good third party free solutions, my favorite is Media Player Classic. Download from here:

I also suggest VLC. My only issue with it is that I can't get it to open 16:9 videos properly, I usually need to manually select that aspect ratio in order to get it. If I open one, set the AR, then open another when the first one is done it's fine but if I close VLC then open the next video I have to re-select the AR.

Overall though, VLC is a good choice.

Hi there,

I have just bought a new laptop and have Win7 Ultimate 64Bit on board.
I found info on installing WMP10 on Win7 in another forum and followed theinstructions, but have had no luck getting it to work.

I don't want a 3rd party player. The reason I want WMP10 is it is the only player that combines a left hand navigation panel like explorer with (and this is the deal breaker for everything else I have seen) "Artist" and "Album Artist".
If you listen to lots of DJ sets and live albums you will understand the importance of having these two things seperately. WMP11 and 12 have it, but only in one view and you can't make this default, so they are a pain for me to use.
Why does MS have to make it so difficult to retrofit their own software - seems insane to me...

Anyway, any help on this install would be soooooooo appreciated!

Hi johnnybigs and welcome to the Forum.
I think you are out of luck here. Microsoft official stance on this is, quote:
"Windows Media Player 10 is the all-in-one media player that provides the best experience for discovering, playing, and taking your digital entertainment anywhere--on Windows XP-based PCs"
It is not compatible with Windows 7.

But then if you read the thread nobody else has got it to work, all the posts are negative.

I dont have problem with WMP but I hate it when it hangs. so having this alternative may be good

My solution, as VLC doesn't have an explorer style navigation tree or sort music under Album Artist not just Artist was to install VMWare and install XP and WMP10 in the virtual machine.

I'm very quickly getting to the point of rolling back to XP completely, Win7 seems to have as many oversights and frustrating "Microsoft says NO! cough" elements I am pretty much over it.

It all depends on what is it that you are using your PC for. If your main purpose for it is listening to music, then it really makes no difference what OS to use, XP would work fine, 7 would work great as well.

Personally I have never used any of the "computer browsing" features of any given music player, so I really do not understand your frustration - if I want to listen to music or watch a video on a PC (as rare as this happens) I simply double-click on the media file in Windows Explorer and some player pops us and plays it.

Now, if you feel that WMP10 is the best choice for you - then by all means, go ahead and use it. The Microsoft download page for WMP10 lists XP in "system requirements". For most other apps this would not mean "not working in 7", but sometimes it happens. If that's the case and WMP10 is the most important thing for you in your PC - then I see no problem with using XP.

On the other hand, I totaly disagree with your statement that "Windows 7 seems to have as many oversights and frustrating "Microsoft says NO! cough" elements". Personally I have not experienced any. It's true that 7 is somewhat different from XP, so if you are dead set on using exactly the layout that some particular apps have in XP, then maybe you're out of luck with 7. But, if you allow yourself a little flexibility you will discover why most of the people call 7 the best OS ever made.

If you could post how you did this that would benefit everyone.

It's interesting because my school has a thing for WMP 10 as it is installed on all their systems, even the windows 7 ones. However, they must have a custom installation because as soon as you go to the full screen mode, it looks and acts like WMP 12. This proves it is possible but I think it bight require a lot of work. It would be easier to use some other program such as VLC media player as suggested earlier. I use WMP 12 with the full K-Lite codec pack. The codec pack is set to use WMP as the default player.

It plays almost everything I throw at it, and I find its 'customisability' to be perfectly satisfactory.

The XP box runs WMP 10 with the same codec pack.

What view or size it is when it opens is irrelevant, unless you are incapable of performing a
single-click with a mouse, which I doubt (yes, I use single-click).

For the handful of tracks it WON'T play, I use the K-Lite player, or VLC.

WMP is a lot like IE in that it cops a lot of criticism, and almost all of it is unjustified.
