Windows Media Player 12 Sucks Eggs

I looked at Foobar2000. It's looks really cool. I have to try it. BTW, don't waste your time messing with WMP12 it will only make you heave in the toilet.

I think your confusing WMP with a picture of Hillary.

Since I've added codecs for mkv files WMP is fine.
I see what you mean!

Just built a new W7 x64 system a couple of weeks ago. foobar2000 for audio and VLC for video. Works perfectly for me. I have not yet even fired up WMP at all.

WMP12 isn't my favorite thing either, but you're really exaggerating the situation. You don't like WMP12, that's fine, you've said that. But going on like what I highlighted in my quote here just makes you sound petulant and childish.

Get over it and move on......if you find something you like better, that's great, tell us what you find....but enough with the immature WMP12 bashing.

Won't you at least give windows media player 12 a TRY? From your comments, it seems as if you haven't used it yet and simply are judging it from past perspectives. I agree, that windows media player was horrible in the past  but they really did windows media player 12 right.
Try to maintain a good mind and fair judgement okay? :D

Was that addressed to me? If so, I suggest you go back and re-read my post more carefully. I made no judgment for or against WMP 12. The OP asked for suggestions for alternatives and I passed along what I use. I did mention that I have yet to start WMP on my recently built rig, but I would hardly call that passing judgment. Since you bring the subject up, I have no motivation to try WMP because I am perfectly happy with my current media playing abilities and nothing I have read about WMP 12 compels me to want to try it. foobar2000 is a solid, robust audio player and VLC has handled everything I have thrown at it without the need for any additional codecs to be installed. I am sticking with what works for me until circumstances dictate otherwise. That's really all there is to it.

WMP12 is actually quite good if you get to know it.

Answering your question then the kmplayer is absolutely fantastic. It plays anything you throw at it comes with an abundant of features for both audio and video.

I think 7 and WMP does a much better job at playing all sorts of media than previous versions. All I have to do most of the time is associate the file with MWP and bAAm... playback; however, for those files that WMP can't do... because it can't or because I haven't installed any extra codec packs yet, Kantaris is amazing... it's VCL on steroids: Kantaris Media Player Free and open-source media player

Nice to see so much activity on my post. But the fact remains that WMP12 has issues for me. Namely, the lack of docking the enhancements on the player. I want my equalizer docked, period end of story. So in essence it still sucks eggs:p

I really think the media center and the media player are some of the reasons people should buy windows 7 Are you crazy not to like being able to stream your collection to a potable device anywhere? or share shows that you tivo if you set a tv up I mean the possibilities are absolutely endless with this media player and for a change they got it right it works without needing a frigging service pack it just works out of the box further its inexpensive in my humble opinion windows 7 and its media possibilities are going to put Microsoft back at the top.

Doesn't anyone have an answer

I still can't play .wmv formatted files on my WMP on Windows 7 laptop. Shark guy said his codecs wouldn't help cause wmv is native to WMP. So if it's native, why doesn't it play? Dang. I tried streaming the same audio/video file through VLC and that other media player with the Llama and it's gets me closer, but still only gives the video with no sound. Ugg.

I do not understand why so many have issues with WMP12 or WMC.

I have a HUGE video library ..

Everything from MP4s at 1280x720 with 5.1 AAC surround .. 6400bitrates
to MKVs at 1920x1080 with 5.1 ACE 12500 bitrate

Even some MP4 DVD encodes at 720x480 2Kbitrate and AAC stereo
Even a few WMVs & AVIs

Perhaps some of the issues could possible be the way the video was encoded?

the only issue I have had with MP4s in WMP is if its over 4GB in size .. but this is a MP4box problem, NOT WMP.
Anything over 4GB should be in a MKV container.

I have never had any issues at all with WMP12 playing video files.
In fact, the picture quality is superior to VLC IMHO for HD content. (not that VLC is bad, just doesnt look as good to me)
At least using Hardware acceleration or FFDshow decoders. (in Sharks package)

Nothing is perfect. Overall, WMP is okay so long as you don't buy DRM protected media and don't let it connect to the internet except when you want it to. Volume (or the lack thereof) is an issue on laptop speakers. Otherwise I use it for all of my media except the rare instances when I find something that won't play, but VLC usually has that covered.
