hi all

i am trying to play WMV files in Windows Media Player 12, and i get the following error.

the file that you are attempting to play has an extension (.wmv) which does not match the file format. Playing the file may may result in unexpected behaviour.

Do you want the player to try to play this content?

when i click on yes it just loops back to the same message.

1) This happens with ALL wmv files
2) This happens both when i try to open the file from within WMP or via explorer (open with)
3) when i browse for the file from within WMP the thumbnail shows up as the first frame of the movie, as it does with all other playable formats.
4) WMV files play just fine with Media Player Classic, VLC, BS Player Pro, and even ACDSee Photo manager. in fact everything i have plays it except WMP 12.

Note: i have the latest K-Lite Codec pack installed.

any ideas anybody?

I havent done any testing with the K-Crap in a long time.
Do the files play if you uninstall that codecpack?

Keep K-lite unloaded and try Shark's codecs and see if they solve the problem - Shark007's FREE Codec solutions.

If they don't, at least there's an expert here who can help...

If they do, there's a donate button on his site... hint, hint....:)

And tell Irene I said thanks. :)

If uninstalling K-Crap didnt fix it, installing my software probably wont fix it either.
WMV is decoded by the Operating System.
My next guess towards a resolve would by uninstalling any video conversion or editting software.

LOL, Shark wouldnt even install. it gets half way then just Hangs. Dont worry about it, i can just tell Windows to open WMV files with VLC or some other program. Its no biggie really.

As Shark said, the problem is not with the codecs. I've run K-Lite on my XP systems, and now run it on one Windows 7 system, and Shark's codecs on the other two Windows 7 systems, and I have no problems with any formats on any of the three systems.

Bottom line: If you have to use something other than Windows for one of the native Windows file types, there's a problem somewhere.

Yes, I agree with @TheSchaft - if you cant play the file with its correct programme, then there is something wrong, and you should try to find the problem thats causing it.

Try changing the proxy settings in WMP12. Works a couple of times and you get the file properties with the correct information. Somehow, after you load the same file a few times one of the properties of the file is not loaded and WMP 12 fails to play it. Reset the proxy (no proxy, use the browser, etc) and works for a few more loads till it fails again.
