Windows media player and burning audio CD

for years when i burn an audio cd all the tracks one at a time would saying preparing then it would go to writing one at a time down the list
now it saying preparing and it writes the song right afterwords instead of preparing next song
why is this

sometimes yes
it will say burn failed after doing just one track

I don't use WMP so I can't explain why. I use CCCP/MPC-HC and AIMP for my audio/video needs.
Yes, there are many free burners available.

My recommendation is InfraRecorder for simple tasks.
