Hi all,

I'm trying to get the 'play to' function working in windows media player. I have my desktop and laptop both on the same network and they can detect each other fine. network discovery, media streaming etc are enabled on both systems and i have set each device to 'allowed' under streaming options.

I've also enabled 'allow remote control of my player' in the wmp stream options. I want to be able to use play to on my laptop to play the music on my desktop speakers. My desktop shows up in the play to list but when i try to use it, it just hangs on 'contacting network device' and then eventually says 'device is not responding'.

Has anyone got an idea on how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Hmm... are both computers running Windows 7? It would help a lot if you could fill out your specs completely and also post specs of the other computer you're trying to play to.

yep, both are running win 7 ultimate. dekstop is self built and laptop is eee pc 1000he, I think the problem might be that the wireless im running on the laptop is an ad hoc network.

I'm in university halls so the internet connection is through ethernet but i use my wireless dongle to send the connection from my desktop to laptop.

Im pretty sure it would work if both pc's were connected up to a router so i'll just give up for now.

I really don't know why else your setup wouldn't work... but this article basically says your school's internet may not be fast enough for streaming, so I'm not sure getting a router would fix the issue. Maybe try borrowing a friend's first to see if it works?
